Bought new three months ago.. only has 1100 miles on the odo..

took off the kdss cover today to clean up the mud gunk.

the shit is already rusting… forward facing accumulator got chipped. god damn yota. Why not just create a more comprehensive cover?

I am not in the salt belt. This pos is garage kept this entire time.

from the accumulated mud( forest roads at worst) I am assuming the front driver side wheel throws a lot of crap into this area, resulting in chips and accumulation of mud.

Nope.. mag chloride.. if road gets treated.. many times, no treatment necessary. Salt is terrible for the water

Wow. I just learned something. Here in Texas we use brine on the rare days we get snow/sleet/ice on the roads.

If there's no rust you are good. Since the cover collect all mud and dirt it's best to remove it and clean.
If any repairs needed Groove Toyota seems to have fixed KDSS with happy customers. (Stay away from Autonation Toyota Arapahoe. I have few problems at service and they claimed install a new battery to my friend but just cleaned the old battery. )

My former 4Runner had kdss I removed the accumulator skid with less than 5k miles on the odo and the wires were gunked in mud (never took it mudding just some fire trails) makes me wonder how most peoples look who never ever removed the accumulator skid

I remove the little cover/skid plate at least once a year and spray it with a protectant like Boeshield.

Over the exterior? Does that coating even stay affixed?

Boeshield turns into a waxy film once it dries. I spray it on my frame too

Mag chloride is worse for corrosion...
Paint adhesion on all the frame welds is poor, so the welds rust first. That's a battle you can't win.

^Thanks for the link. Reading through it, the report says MgCl2 is more corrosive than NaCl when tested to the SAE J2334 standard, which is closer to the conditions experienced by automobile components (road spray kicked up by tires). The tests also show MgCl2 likes to stick and continues to corrode when trapped in crevices.
