Check engine light with code 52?

Has anyone ever experienced the check engine light with code 52? I have a kind of loud noise coming from engine gets louder with revs

 

52 is a knock sensor code I believe

No problem. I don't have much experience with it but I think it is pretty common with the 3 litres. There's a pretty good writeup on yotatech about it and how you can isolate the problem. It could be a timing/distributor problem.

If it's your knock sensor, I can tell you Toyota really likes them. Just paid over $320 for the sensor and it's pigtail.

So to my knowledge the 052 code means the ECU is not getting a signal from the knock sensor. The ECU will retard timing to prevent any damage to the motor. From your video it sound like it's it's missing/out of time. I would definately start with checking all the wiring associated with the knock sensor.

 

I have no clue. My current work computer does not have any speakers so I have no clue what noise the video is portraying. We had to buy a new one because we broke the old one while disassembling the engine.

I would save your money on the knock sensor until you check your wiring. The chances of the sensor itself being bad are pretty low.

So I replaced the knock sensor yesterday and the pig tail and it’s still giving me code 52 and running awful when check engine light comes on right after driving ? Any other things I should check I know the guy told me yesterday that my timing was off by a tooth or something like that

 

Timing is a big deal and can make your engine act funny. Not sure what effect one tooth would have. Ours was off by 3 teeth on one side and 1 tooth on the other along with a few other issues, so she ran like a total crap. We have since fixed all her issues and am waiting to put the revamped engine back in and she how she was meant to ride.

 

Yeah these things can be tricky it’s funny though because it’ll run and drive like new for like 2 min and then as soon as check engine comes on she’s back in safe mode if I turn off the car and start right back up she’s good again for another minute or two before check engine comes on it’s kind of stressful but I’m trying my best to get her back to great running condition

 

Yeah, mine ran like shit all the time and never threw an engine code when we got it. I will chat with my hubby and see what he thinks when I see him tonight.

Without standing there, it sounds like an exhaust leak. Did you check your EGR when you replaced the knock sensor? You might need to do a compression check. Just hard to diagnose it from a short video off the net.

 

Yes it isn’t loud anymore the bolts on the exhaust were loose now it’s quiet but still get the code 52 and limp mode after driving a minute or two

 

Are you sure your gas cap is on tight? I know sometimes if the cap is loose or worn out and not holding a seal, it will cause a vacuum leak and throw a code. Just continuing to guess here.

 

I ended up selling it haha I couldn’t figure it out and I was starting to get irritated with the limp mode I still have two 4x4 left a 2005 and a 2003 so I’m good for now haha thank you so much for your help
