Center Locking Differential

Hi All,
I have a limited 2005 4runner and really value the center locking differential. I mostly go on to rocky trails, some snow, and some sand where I will have it engaged sometimes if I am in 4L. I have never really felt like the CDL has saved me, but I like knowing that it is there should I need it.
I am looking to trade in my 2005 for a 5th generation model and found a 2013 SR5 4WD. But I don't understand how it could have 4WD but not have a center differential lock. Can someone explain this to me? What do you think of that feature? I am new to going to places where I would use 4WD so there is a lot I don't know and haven't experienced yet.

 

The Limited is full time 4WD, it’s always 4WD but with a torsion center diff that allows power to go where needed. It’s still lockable and has a high low gear range.

A typical 4WD is RWD until you Front and rear together, then it operates the same.

Limited = 4hi unlocked > 4hi locked > 4lo locked
The rest = RWD (2hi unlocked) > 4hi locked > 4lo locked


Traditional 4WD doesn’t have a center diff lock because there’s no center differential. Differentials let the 2 sides spin at different speeds, 4WD is either rear wheel drives or locked in 4WD.

 

Hi, thanks for your reply but I am confused by it.
First, how is my limited full time 4wd when I have to manually put it into 4H or 4L?
Also are you saying with the SR5, there is no need for a differential lock because it is automatic for front and rear?
