    Hello all,

this is my first post and I had a question about replacing my catalytic converter.

So currently my 98 runner is not passing the CAT, O2, and EV during the smog test.

After further inspection it looks like the flange is all rusted out on the O2 sensor port of the muffler. So I just bought two new sensors, a new muffler and tailpipe.

I’m hoping that these new sensors will clear the codes for the CAT and O2 test, but say the CAT needs to be replaced.

Will a non-CARB compliant CAT for Nevada cause issues for the CA smog?

I’m asking this because the smog shop had told me that I can fail one of the tests because of my vehicle year.

so if the CAT isn’t CA compliant, it shouldn’t matter since I can fail one of the steps to pass the smog.... right?

I’m just wonder what a non-compliant Cat will do when running a smog test.

hopefully this makes sense. Any advice or info would definitely help.

    thanks!

    Basic info........it's a gamble?

A CARB-compliant converter will also have an Executive Order (EO) number/stamp on its body. The stamped number on the converter body must match the correct EO number listed on the California Air Resources Board website for aftermarket catalytic converters.

The tech/smog station have their hands tied and can lose their license if they were to get caught.

By the way Borla and Magnaglow sell CA compliant cats by themselves. Not very cheap and limited application, but you can try there.

Thanks guys. I looked into it a bit further and if a new cat is needed, I’ll just have to opt for a CARB Cat.

They’re not the cheapest, but at least I won’t have to worry about it.

I’m replacing the muffler, O2 sensors, and tailpipe tomorrow. I’ll update with what the OBD reads.

    Thanks again guys.
