Ok, I was out shoveling snow, came back into the garage, and noticed a buzzing noise coming from the 4runner, it seemed to be coming from underneath near the spare tire… almost sounded like an air compressor running but not nearly that loud. The vehicle was shut off… I hadn’t driven it in 3-4 hours. I started the 4runner and pulled out of my garage, shifted into and out of 4WD, drove a bit, came back and it stopped. Any ideas.. is this common? I have no idea what it would be, but Im sure someone here knows! (2022 TRD-ORP).

Yep, my 2012 sequoia does it too.

First time I walked out in the garage and heard it, I thought it was the fuel pump running. Freaked me out.

It’s explained in the user manual somewhere in the intro section up front. Five hours after shutdown the fuel evap leakage test runs for several minutes. It usually freaks people out the first time they hear it.

This from the owners manual of my 2018 Tacoma. I heard it for the first time recently and was likewise puzzled. Clever folks on the Tacoma World explained how simple of mind I am:

Thank you for posting this. I had the same thing happen ~1-2 weeks ago. I started the 4Runner and turned it off within 30 seconds and the sound went away. Grateful now I know what that was.

good to know.. i would have thought the same.. owned a ford explorer years ago that had repeated recalls for fuel pumps running when off and overheating and starting on fire... (that suv was always parked outside so if didnt burn the house down)... glad this is just evap and not a run away fuel pump..

I'll bet that Toyota service advisors probably mutter "it's the evap system and it's perfectly normal" in their sleep based on how many times this must come up on a daily basis.

I experienced this phenomenon last night for the first time. I remembered seeing it in the manual, but it still caught me off guard. It started a little over 7 hours after it was last running, and the sound went on for quite a while (on the order of five minutes).
