I'm looking specifically for a silver TRD ORP with no moonroof or kdss, and the only ones that I can find are in the mid west (none in California). I'm considering purchasing and shipping it to California, but curious if anyone here has done this? The rates don't seem that bad when you factor in the gas/mileage/airfare/hotel/food/time that I would have to front to pick it up and drive it home.

I bought a vehicle out of state, flew out and drove it back. The purchase was easy, just made sure everyone was on the same page before-hand. Same as buying in state.

I drove it back though so I don't know about shipping

I've done this. I flew to Connecticut from Virginia and drove it back after purchase. It was like buying any other car. Just make sure to check local/state laws regarding taxes to make sure you're paying the right people.

For example in my situation, I paid no connecticut sales tax as I was active duty stationed in Virginia but I registered it in Washington State.

I've shipped as well. Easy deal, get learned up about the bidding process.

I bought a Lexus from a California dealer and had it shipped to Oregon (can't drive it out of California without paying their taxes). The process was actually fairly simple, but it was a little weird purchasing a car that I never saw in person. No issues with shipping, damage, etc. I'd do it again if the deal was right or if it was something I couldn't find local.

Have you actually found one configured how you want in another state? When I started looking I wanted classic silver, TRD OR (not premium) w/ KDSS but no moonroof. In CA an extremely high percentage have a moonroof and non-premiums were far and few between. Add the color and it was like looking for a unicorn. At the time there were zero in North America and zero in allocation. This is a vehicle I plan on keeping for the long haul so I wanted it exactly how I wanted it. I told the dealer that I wasn't in a hurry and requested that they check allocation periodically. They agreed but advised that the odds were not in my favor. As luck would have it about three weeks later Toyota happened to build one. ONLY ONE! It was destined for a dealer in the northeast but they were able to swing a trade and get it for me. If you can wait I'd advise you to find a dealer that's willing to check allocation regularly because it would save you the cost of shipping. However, if have found one and really want that exact configuration then I would think it's worth the while to ship.

Yep I've found numerous ORP in silver without moonroof or kdss, just several states over from mine.

I’ve purchased other vehicles out of state and they usually collect the sales tax from the state in which you registered the vehicle.
They have become like a 3rd world country with power rationing, tax upon tax and complete mismanagement of their resources as well as the states budget just like so many other states. Maybe when everyone is walking or taking public transportation and living in container houses stacked up like they do in China will utopia be realized.

I bought the same but Metallic Gray in Colorado in December. Saved thousands over what anyone in the South wanted. In fact, inventory absolutely sucks here. Fly and buy was a good plan in my case.

As a weird offer to you, I live in the midwest (Ohio) and am always up for a road trip to visit my peeps in California. If you end up wanting someone to drive it versus delivery I would happily deliver it to you in California for only reimbursement of the gas used and the airline ticket home, assuming you buy it at a dealer within a few hundred miles of me. I will fart in your seats though.

Note that to register it in California you will have to get it smogged at a STAR dealer and pay the taxes. Taxes are probably obvious but if you never bought a car out of state while living in California before, the smog thing at specific dealers only can be less than convenient.

Is there any possible opportunity to wrap a mini vacation around this event? Reason I suggest this is, I tend to like to see and touch (and in this case....drive) any capital purchase this expensive before I sign on the dotted line for it. Besides, I'm betting it could be a pretty fun and memorable trip....even if it did turn out to be a little more money than having it shipped. Just a thought.

have you already searched inventory on toyota.com?
you can search near you, or at least in the DPRK

I just searched your terms near DFW TX, and found this
    https://smartpath.toyota.com/invent...dealerCd=42323&vin=JTERU5JR4R6267413&type=new

they are even giving a discount...

another problem you should consider if you plan to buy it out of state and drive it home...
some states don't let you drive it out without plates...

I looked at doing this as a Texas resident, and TX has a provision to pre register it and get tags...
