Bug deflector

So I put a bug deflector on my 4Runner to help protect that edge of the hood because in the 6 months I’ve had it, it’s covered in paint chips. It’s no longer happening now that I’ve installed the deflector however it seems that maybe it’s causing rock chips to go straight to my windshield. Has anyone ever heard of this?

 

The 4Runner is extremely susceptible to rock chips due to the upright window, similar to Jeep Wranglers. Basically, the longer you own a 4Runner, the more windshields you'll replace, bug deflector or not.

So in other words I should keep the bug deflector on to Atleast protect the paint in the front?

I would use PPF (paint protection film) before I install a bug deflector.

 

"Film" may protect against dirt and bugs. It will be no protection at all against rocks flung up by passing vehicles.

 

Should have gotten the stone and bug deflector.

 

I think how well PPF works for small pebbles etal is subjective.

I researched Xpel a lot and decided to go with it. I don’t use my 4R as everyday vehicle though so I have not really put it to the test.

I saw a lot of Xpel going on exotic cars (Ferrari and Ford GT) at the shop I went to. While I am sure nothing is perfect I chose this over the bug deflector just for aesthetic purposes.

 

This is completely inaccurate. Even if you go with the lowest brand possible it will provide coverage.

 

You made a solid choice using Xpel. They have high quality PPF and their authorized installers go through extensive training on their products.

 

Thanks. I had a lot of confidence in my installer and saw exotic cars getting installed. They have a special garage in a garage if you will with special filtration systems keep dust out. Our only concern is would the film yellow after 10 years since I plan to keep my 4R hopefully 20. He said worse case let’s just plan on redoing the hood and grill in 10 years.

They took time to show me a special wax to use on the PPF areas as well.

It is an impressive install and you cannot see any edges on the hood. The only smallest of spot I found was around the fog light. Because the ORP has so many curves on the lower bumper it took a lot of finnesing. I had on tiny tiny bubble that many would ignore. My shop fixed it without issue.

If it was not cost prohibitive to due the whole truck I would. You cannot tell it’s on the hood and the edges are wrapped onto the inside of the hood.

I figured if the Ferrari, Ford GT and classic Detroit Muscle car guys are getting it it’s good enough for a 4Runner.

 

Any installer who represents Xpel is top notch as it shows with them wrapping it around the edges. You can also have a reputable detail place put on ceramic coating to prevent the UVs from paint damage as well.

This was the first thing I did when mine got off the truck: paint correction, Xpel ppf and tint, and ceramic pro. Living in AZ thr sun will just demolish your vehicles if you don't take care of it properly.

 

I can imagine the sun doing a lot of damage in AZ. I am in Michigan and only drive it on nice summer days and otherwise in the garage. Here the frames are an issue to so I got the fluid film just in case even though mine does not see winter.

I do not know much about ceramic coatings just always done my own polish and wax. My shop offers that service though. I just always enjoyed hanging on the garage applying wax myself a few times per year.
