I have my Bilstein 5100s set at the 3rd of 4 notches with OME coils. I recently learned that the 5100s are supposed to be set at the bottom notch with OME coils. I am pretty leveled right now. If I take that notch down to the bottom notch will I loose lift? Will it help my CV axels? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The general rule of thumb is that if you are using springs to lift, you should set the 5100’s at the OEM setting.

I have 5100’s and set them at .85 to level my rig when it had the OEM springs.

When I upgraded the springs to Dobinsons to get a 2” lift, I reset the 5100’s to the OEM setting per the advice I received from Crikey Mike at Exit Off-Road where I purchased the springs.

    Cheers,
    Bob

I don’t know the ‘why’ you’re supposed to set the 5100’s back to 0” notch with after market springs, but on my Tacoma I had them set at .85” with OEM springs then set them back to 0” with my OME 883’s as per instructed.

Because you get lifted from lifted springs (longer and stronger) rather than just adding preload.

If you search in Google Images "broken Bilstein", you'll see what happens to them when there's too much preload on lifted springs.

Once click up isn't the end of the world, but they really shouldn't be used any higher.

Also, Bilstein gives no warranty on their 5100's if a non-OEM spring is used.
