I have gotten an honest 21.4 cruising at ~65 MPH and loaded with gear. I doubt I'll see that number ever again, though.

 

Just a few stops along with 45-55 local “highway.” Strange to see it this high when not on a true highway and since I stopped at a few lights after filling up.

I think these things get their best fuel economy at lower highway speeds. At higher speeds, wind resistance becomes a huge factor.

Yep. My 2020 is pushing 11k and I use an external mileage tracker.....and it's 17.1 total for all miles. But we knew this going in, so I'm not disappointed at all.

 

If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

 

I would bet that 22-23 can be achieved in the right conditions. These vehicles love cruising at 55-70. If someone lives in a rural area, and has a light foot, it should be easy to average over 20.

Haha, easier to say than to do, Thatbassguy! I’ve tried to move my mileage up a bit, and it’s extremely difficult to do, even in the best of circumstances with all my driving skills applied. 4 Runners are pretty locked in at around 18mpg/13.1 l/100 km. They’re heavy, even as stock vehicles. And their 4 litre engine, while excellent, is doing its best giving you ~18. There’s always going to a guy somewhere with wild claims, but if you look at the various threads on here about mileage from owners across the continent, the mileage is predictable and relatively constant.

I've gotten over 20 several times. As I mentioned earlier, I got 21.4 with a loaded roof rack, KO2's, and hauling tools and recovery gear.

As I said, it requires the right driver and conditions. I've also gotten 18+ several times lifted on 285's.

This is not based on the dash. This is as calculated when I fill up.

EDIT: but, I do agree that it's not easy. If you're in a hurry, forget about it.

 

There’s a lot of variables when calculating mileage manually, Thatbassguy, as you know. Good on you though!

 

How are there variables? This was with stock size KO2's. Divide miles driven by gallons added. It's not hard.

Are you going to point out that I didn't compensate for the speedometer being 3% off? This would be the same for anyone calculating from the odometer, yourself included.

Check fuelly.com if you're interested. Out of 144 2019 4runners, 13 are averaging 20 or better, with the best being 21.9.

No, it's not common to average over 20. On fuelly, the 4runner did average about 17.5. You're right that in general, it won't get over 20.

But, it's not impossible. It depends on where you drive and your right foot.

That reminds me of when I bought my '03. My buddy and I took a mini road trip that weekend, and the dash displayed 21.5 MPG. I was so impressed until I filled up and realized that I was really getting 17. I wound up averaging between 17-18 with the V8 over the next 177K miles.

I was doing better with this one before the lift/tires/extra 250-300# of steel/winch. Now I'm between 16-17 usually. But, that's closer to actual mileage as the 285's seem to perfectly compensate for the speedometer being inaccurate. I've compared it to GPS, and it seems to be perfectly accurate now. I guess 285's really are the right size for this thing!

 

We are @ 8,100 miles since new. Changed oil @ 6k due to a long trip. Nothing since last summer & we get a constant computer of 14mpg & 13.5 by hand. Granted all we do is run errands with it since covid. I believe my wife said she saw one tank of 20mpg+ the whole trip.
Stock tire size (different tires) & the rest of the little things are in my description. No reason to spend money on a vehicle that is sitting...
That said; we want an ARB awning and room... social distancing! Lol
We cannot break 14 ish around town. The cost of running the best vehicle in the segment...
We love our T4R!

Not sure if you're joking or serious. I never said I ever got 23. But, if I could get get 21 with a roof basket (again, all highway @65 MPH), 22-23 isn't really all that crazy.

I've noticed that these things are sensitive to climate. The only times I've gotten exceptional mileage was in warm weather. If you live in a colder climate, your odds of getting 20+ MPG are a lot lower than someone down south.

Nobody buys these things for the fuel economy anyway.

 

With hypermiling driving techniques getting higher than average MPGs is definitely possible. I just hate when people driving in front of me are doing it in the (#1) left lane or on a two-lane road.

I get an average of 14-15 MPGs with mixed hwy/city driving. Roof rack installed, lifted with 285’s and a Sprint Booster set to Sport 5. In California, people drive fast. If you are driving the Interstate/HWY speed limit (Usually 55-65mph) then you need to be in the far right lane along with big rig 18wheelers. Average speed is 70-80mph here to keep up with the flow of traffic, which puts my 4Runner just around 2100-2200 rpms contributing to my lower than average 4Runner MPGs.

I also think because of this, California drivers probably get the worse average MPGs in the country with all makes and models. Our driving RPMs are is usually higher than most states. The aggressive drivers contribute to this also.

Hey mcat707, that’s how it is in Canada too. If you don’t want to be in a moving canyon between the 18 wheelers, maybe missing the exit signs, you need to drive with the crowd, who are always going fast.
