I have to drive 3 hours in deep freeze conditions near Seattle - basically a sheet of ice on an interstate at 21 degrees. I have a rental SR5 with stock tires. Anyone have any recs for how I can increase traction? Minimal hills but I'm concerned about traction given stock tires. I plan on 4H by default. Would 4L with A-TRAC be best for lower speeds? Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

4H, increase following distance and time to your destination. Stock tires are usually rated for adverse weather at a minimum.
Look well ahead and anticipate know conditions.
    Don't white knuckle it.
    Headlights for safety.

Myself and no doubt others, cruise in those conditions daily in temps into the single digits.

If it truly is a sheet of ice, and not hard pack or fresh snow, then do not drive. Gravity and inertia will overcome any and all efforts.

I live in Wis and drove a municipal plow truck for 22yrs. I have a ****ton of experience on ice. It is not fun.

If you really have to drive, I suggest airing down to 20 lbs. Keep your speed under 35 mph if you go that low. Any faster and you could heat up the tires and have a blow-out. Good luck on the Dunlops.

On 3rd sets of brigestone dueler highway terrain made in japan weight 39 lbs for 120k miles mostly interstate hwy no off road 19-24 mpg cargo loaded - beautiful tires. If i go on ice, i will install studded tires. Cheap insurance compare to accident. To each his own.

For ice you may want 4 low. Years ago I was dropping off my friend in the Bronx after working all night in lower Manhattan. I was fine until I left the highway for local streets. I exited on to Dykman street and when I hit the brakes I started sliding right toward parked cars. Luckily I stopped before slamming into them. My friend decided to walk the last mile so I didn't have any crashes.

Studded tires are not legal in many states unless it's for the U.S. Mail delivery, ambulance, police or fire trucks. Studded tires work but not always an option. Stoney Ranger has some good advice about ice driving. Once you start sliding on the ice your at the mercy of gravity and momentum. Have fun and be careful out there!

You can air down to the rim, the stock tires are total crap, it won’t help. Don’t play with that, leave at 32psi. Around Seattle, not sure if it worth your time and money, but I would not leave the house without winter tires. You see , snow is snow, it’s ok, ice is fu#%cked. No system on the car will beat inertia.
Even so, you may drive like an angel, nothing stops others from hitting you and we all know the roads are full of these unpredictable and unprepared idiots.
Cancel plans. Postpone for 1-2 days. Stay safe. Imagine wrecking the 4R, was it worth it ?

Drove out of truckee Wednesday afternoon following 193” of snow, then north from reno and back over the cascades on the 58 to get to Portland. Only change to the runner was some stock sized cooper discover at4s tires. 14hours total with 12 of them being on ice snow mixed conditions. All i can say is slow the hell down or stay home. 20-ish mph was max over all the passes and turns, and 40-45 mph for anything long and straight.
