My '99 Ltd has been throwing the P0420. I've replaced sensors twice but the check engine came back and based on smell, I'm thinking the catalytic converter must be bad. Since the vehicle is over 20 years old, it's not required to pass an emissions test, should I just remove the cc? Are there options other than buying a new one?

Mine was replaced under a Toyota recall. Got a letter in the mail, done deal. It wont run right without it.

You can try and remove the cat, but you have to fool the ECU.

You can try removing the cat and washing it out. Check youtube. A bunch of people claim it can be done. I'm skeptical to be honest but it's cheap to try.

I would just go with a after market cat, they don’t last as long as OE but they are a lot cheaper.
