    Hi everyone.
I purchased a 2021 4Runner SR5 TRD Off Road yesterday, but I can’t get the auto start to work. I understand it’s a click click and then click/hold of the lock button. My lights flash every time, but then nothing.

Has anyone else had this issue?

    thank you in advance

Are you sure yours is equipped with remote start? I didn't even know they were offering this now.

Is it SR5 it TRD off-road? Those are different trims.

    Welcome to the forum!

As mentioned, I don’t think it’s a feature in the 4runners but I could be wrong. I know in the 2020 and after Tacoma’s that’s how you get to do it, but I believe it’s only on the pro trim. So it may be the same case with the 4Runners if they even come equipped with it.

It’s the TRD Off Road. Sorry, when I did the Build and Price, it was also under the SR5 heading.

I was told when I bought it yesterday that it had auto start and that it could also be started by using the app.

It only comes with the Limited and the TRD Pro from the factory. All the other trim levels need an aftermarket kit installed. I believe its somehow tied to the upgraded JBL sound system.

It looks like this feature could be added by the dealer starting in 2020. If it wasn't added at the factory, the dealer would have had to set it up. Maybe they didn't actually program it.

I might just take it back to the dealer and ask them to demonstrate how to use it. Then you'll know if they lied.

Do you know if the TRD OffRoad package can use the Toyota app to start the vehicle? Or is that only included with the Limited and Pro?

I honestly don't know. I just googled Toyota 4runner remote start, and the article about dealerships being able to add it in 2020 popped up.

I didn't notice if it said which trims this included. My guess is that it would only work on trims that have push button start.

I could be wrong, though. It wouldn't be the first time!

I bought a 2021 Venture (which is essentially a TRD ORP) and d/led the app. Its not an option on the app. The strange thing is if you are in Canada the app remote start is available on almost all the trims. I think in the US its only included on the Limited and the PRO version. The only option I see is the accesorides aftermarket kit. I even asked my dealer and they werent even sure and couldnt find a Toyota part listing for a remote start for my model. Then again the salesman told me that KDSS was on every model 4Runner so they really don't know what they are talking about.

I have the 2021 premium, with psh button start, and I’m 100 percent certain I don’t have it. I added it when I got it home. In the states it’s on the Pro, Limited and the only other I THINK, is the Nightshade. The rest do not, from factory

What kit did you use to add the remote start?

I used the 12 volt solutions, 100 percent plug and play one. Worked great, easy install. I’ve also read good things on the accessorides (sp?) one as well. I opted for the cheaper version, 3 clicks on my factory fob, as well as a discount code.

I own a 21 Limited Nightshade. The remote start worked once about 2 weeks go. Hasn't worked since. Contacting dealership. I also dislike that it shuts off when the door is opened when it did work.

I own a 2019 TRD Pro (see photo) without a remote start. However, YouTube posted a few videos reviewing aftermarket remote starters for 5th Gen 4Runners. I highly recommend. Accessorides offers a remote start for $300 that is plug and play.

Dealer told me the same, on my TRD premium. The app tell you fuel level, and the odometer only

    Monochrome everything. LED reverse lights.
It’s only avail on pro or limited. But to check Press and hold the lock button until the lights on the 4runner flash and it starts. It takes longer than 3 seconds in my opinion.

Welcome from Wisconsin! I saw a video on YouTube where some TRD ORP had it from the factory, some didn't.

I have a 2020 Nightshade, the app barely worked and I got rid of the free version 12/2020. I used my key fob for remote start and now it wont work. Spent entire day at dealership (they were great) and finally had to call Toyota to report it nor working. They are aware of the issue but do not have any resolutions to it yet. Call Toyota 1-800331-4331 customer care to report.

My bumper also kept popping out from inadequate clips, Toyota known about for over 3 years, just put out a bulletin last week with new clips and how to fix.
A little disappointing, Toyota certainly has slipped.

I have a 2020 Limited, I have only been able to get the remote start using the fob to work a couple times. The dealer said that the app is the main way of starting the truck and that the fob is only a back up. I think they are full of crap. I will need to get a hold of Toyota and ask them myself. Not impressed with the remote start at all. And it is normal for the truck to shut off when you open a door, I was told it is a safety feature.

The dealer is 100% full of crap. I installed an aftermarket where I have to hit the lock 3 times. I do notice that if I click to fast it doesn't work. Its like you have to time it right. It is normal for the truck to turn off when you open the door. I hate that setup but I've had that with other brands with factory remote starts. The last vehicle I had a Mazda CX-5 and it turned off when the door was opened. It was even in the directions of the Mazda kit. I'm ok with it and can live with it. Its nice to be able to warm up my car at work without worrying someone is going to steal it while its running.

I had the Viper remote start installed on my 2017 SR5 Prem and have had no issues with it. I had an aftermarket alarm shop do the install. Beauty of the Viper system, it does NOT shut off when you open the door, that would drive me crazy. Once you climb into your heated seat, you do however, before you touch ANYTHING, need to put the key in and turn it 2 clicks. If you don't put the key in and touch a pedal, it shuts right off - as it should. Viper has it own tiny fob 1.5"x1"x1/4" which unlocks everything w/ 1 click. I've started it remotely from a good 1/4 mile.

    hi folks
I picked up the limited for my wife yesterday. I got the remote start working once, and it didn't work again this morning.
you guys got any recommendations on solving this? I am planning to text my sales guy about it. When I open the door it shuts off. I am not sure that makes sense but whatever... I just wish this keep fob remote start be consistent.

The keyed version of the 4 Runners don't turn off with remote start systems when you open the door. It's the keyless push start version 4Runners that shut off when the door is opened. I wish I had the keyed version. I think you can even do pit stop mode where you can leave the truck running without the key if you had to leave it running for any reason. Awesome in the winter.

Press lock button in your key 3 times and hold it on the 3rd press. It will work
