I bought one at the auto parts store but after a day it threw a code because it was leaking fumes I presume. So if anyone can recommend a brand name that they know does not leak I would appreciate it.

What did you buy the first time? Are you sure it had the gasket attached? Did you turn the cap to the right to close it tight?

The brand is carquest which as I recall isn't very good but the store had it in stock so I gave it a try. The only difference seems to be that there is no tether ring or tether, but it fit and locked perfectly. The odd thing is that it worked initially, which I assume is that the computer needed time to detect the vapor leak. I purchased a very similar cap for my pathfinder and never had an issue. Seems the TR4 is more finicky or the computer is more sensitive.

Are you seeing people stealing gas I assume hence the idea of getting a locking cap?

Be careful with those locking gas caps. I put one on, few days later I went to fill up and it wouldn't come off. Spent a half hour trying to get it to break free. Since then just put the original one back on.

Its not a vapor leak it is detecting, its a lack of pressure in the tank. If it doesn't seal, the tank can not build up adequate pressure and it will trip the code. Its not much pressure, but enough.
