Recently saw these Nokian Outpost nAT tires. They are from Norway and got really good off roading reviews. Haven’t heard of them so I thought I’d ask

    Oooh look, another mod.....

I've never heard of that tire. I Googled them and found this image:

They look nice, but Walmart has them listed @ $328.68 PER tire.

I heard good things about Nokian tires especially about winter tires. But never had them on my vehicles.

It’s kinda odd that there is no side lugs, but the tire grooves wrap around.

They're pretty popular up here in Canada, well regarded winter tires.

Yeah, but that's a 285.75. The stock size (265 /70) is on sale for $184 right now.

I saw a set in person recently, good looking tire, and they looked like they did really well on the gravel roads we were on.

That's kind of a weird picture. Here's a zoom in of the vehicle I was running with that had them. You can see they do have a pretty good sidewall. These were a smaller set too, they were on a Volkswagen Westie.

You can get Maxxis Razr AT tires for less, I saw a ton of reviews over in Australia and they love them. 39 pounds for 3 ply XL tires too

They make the best winter tires. I had a set of Hakkapeliittas on a Scion TC and it was a beast in snow.

I have no experience with any of their truck tires, though.

    Haha!

Hakkapeliittas. Awesome winter tires! There are a few different varieties available.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta are the snow tire gold standard in Alaska. Anyone who can afford them runs them there.

Nokian used to be part of the same Nokia that is known (well, not for phones anymore) for communications but was spun out in the late-80's I believe.

My only experience with Nokian were the Hakkapeliitta on my wife's A4 quattro. They were awesome in the snow.

Nokian makes arguably the best snow tires in the world. If you head over to Norway, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland etc. you'll see them everywhere. I ran them on my VW, Audi, and MB for winter tires.

Nokian make fantastic winter tires. My wife has a set of studded Hakkapeliitta's and their savage in the winter. My father in law bought a set of Outpost's when they first came out and he hated them so much, he went back to his K02's. Hopefully they've refined themselves by now. My personal option is to stick to brands such as Toyo, Cooper and Falken for AT's, especially if their going to be used in snow.

I’m the OP. Yeah I’ve been running Toyo AT3s. Love them. Have about 60k on them and they are holding up well. Maybe get another 5-10 k out of them. I was just looking what’s out there and stumbled upon the Nokian. Never heard of them but read positive posts on them

The General Grabber AT/X is a great tire for snow and studdable for ice.
I have been running them for 10+ years now on almost a dozen vehicles and i think i have a little over 500,000 combined miles on them and i absolutely love them. Snow, ice, sleet, crazy conditions where everyone is in the ditch and i am still driving. Even got caught in a massive ice storm on i-40 pulling my big race trailer loaded down and the whole world shut down, hundreds of cars in the ditches, road at a stand still for 100+ miles and i kept driving and made it through. I was weaving in an out of stand still sideways traffic on ice while pulling a big race trailer and was able to keep going. Been in dozens of white out snow storms, sleet, ect, and drive around in 2wd having a blast while everyone else is stuck on the side of the road. I've been across death valley in the middle of august when the surface temp of the road was 170, run thru Arizona and cali when road surface temps are 160, and parked after a long drive thru the Cali desert and my tire imprint into the asphalt. These tires are practically bulletproof.
My current set on my daily driver has well over 100,000 miles on them now and still has no problems, i am going to get 120,000 miles out of them on my 4R.

Interlocking tread blocks, blocks that trap snow, sleet, sand, will keep you afloat and moving forward. You can see how the BF Goodrich TA/KO has had so much success in Baja and on street vehicles for years, the design of the General Grabber AT, AT2, AT/X all have the same interlocking blocks. This traps the snow in the tread block which gives you traction to move forward. A tire that has more open blocks or a digging style pattern that removes the sand, snow, out from under the tire will give you even less traction as the tire tries to dig down and push the snow out. You will see many of the car tires that have good water expulsion like the aqua-tread do poorly in the snow. These tires push the snow out of the tread the same way they push the water out of the tread and actually hurt the traction in the snow. Also the best snow tires are heavily siped, each one of these sipes actually gives another biting surface to the tire and helps give more traction and also packs snow between the sipes. I have been thru some absolutely brutal stuff, climbed hills covered in snow that i was scared i wouldnt make it but surprisingly went right up. I have never had to stud these General tires, i can literally go anywhere i want regardless of the conditions and have never been stranded with them.

Google KC 6300 wire holder. It sticks to your windshield next to the channel. That’s what I did and you don’t even notice it.

Got the winter R5’s put on the rig today…not especially good looking, but proper tread for the winter. Stateside, I’d opt for some other AT rubber for 3 seasons, but for winter, these are a top choice.IMG_6376.jpg

+1 for Nokian tires. When I used to live in Canada, we had a set of Nokian winter tires and they were amazing. Kind of forgot about them.
