just curious...friend of mine has 2012 4Runner and he took it in for front brakes-replacing pads and rotors. they quoted him $568.00 for the work.
I usually do my own, so I don't know what a decent shop charge is but to my cheap ears, this sounds like a lot....or is it?

Was that from a dealership? It definitely sounds high. I was quoted $400 for just the pads and rotors on my wife's RAV4 so I did them myself for $60. Pads plus grease. Rotors were fine. He needs to shop around or do it himself.

Pads and rotors are stupid easy to replace. A jack, stands, and a socket set and wrench is all you need.

Takes about 30ish minutes and $80 for OEM pads to do the front brakes.

Less than 600 for both rotors and pads, if high quality or OE parts are used, doesnt seem that out of line.

If you figure 200 bucks in OE parts for front, same for rear, then labor is about 200. When I need brakes and rotors, it’s usually the time of the year that determines if I do it, or farm it out. If it’s too cold out, Ill gladly pay for the labor.

A good mechanic wont just slap pads in race-car pit stop style. They'll check the pins, hardware, put some anti-sqweal, put anti-seize dressing between hub and rotor, and hopefully adjust the parking brake shoes. Basically, to get it ready for another 50-70k miles. Because if they dont, the car will probably come back.
