Hi all. I have a special needs child who has an iPad. He often likes to turn the volume all the way up. We ask him to set the volume in the middle, which he'll do. But eventually it's back up again. I'm referring to the iPad speaker, not headphones. I've looked specifically for a way to limit the overall max volume, and the only such setting I can find simply limits loud sounds within the context of what's being viewed, such as an explosion in an otherwise quiet movie. What I want is to set it so that no matter how many times he pushes the volume-up, it only goes so loud. I can't imagine that there's no way to do this, but maybe I'm wrong. Any of you geniuses know of a way to do this? Thanks!

Thanks, I'll look into that when he's away from it. I'm going to guess that this setting applies to music and not videos and such. I don't even see that setting on my iPhone to try it, but it's an 8.

Try Go Guardian to control and limit what he watches. As a SPED Teacher, it's a must on my students devices. It lets you monitor or block content.

This says you need to enable Parental Controls and you can certainly do that.

Thank you for this info. Go Guardian sounds interesting. Gonna look into that.

I have seen how to limit loud sounds and lock the volume. As I understand it, limiting loud sounds is like the explosion example I mentioned. Is this correct, or am I missing something? And locking the volume will eliminate his ability to adjust volume at all - is that correct?

Is this able to be done in the Screen Time or Guided Access capability of iPads and iPhones?

ScreenTime does let us control when the internet is available to the iPad, and we utilize that. But it doen't provide an option for overall volume control/limitation.

Looking into GoGuardian, it looks like it's designed for managed and IT administered devices, not personally owned devices:
"UPDATE: GoGuardian Parent now provides Parents and Guardians with the ability to pause their children's internet, block specific websites, and schedule internet availability on managed devices. These features have no guaranteed functionality on personally owned, unmanaged student devices."

Do you have any experience with personally-owned device usage of GoGuardian?

    Thanks.

I think the "lock" sound is when you turn off the device. That click noise on iphones and ipads when you turn off the screen.

    Settings>Accessibility>Guide Access
What your looking for is to use the Guide Access feature to lock certain things on the IPad. This is the directions I found. This will certainly lock the volume and will eliminate his ability to use those buttons.

"You can always go down to accessibility and turn on guided access. With 3 button clicks, you’ll be able to lock certain functions using a passcode such as volume buttons or lock button or even touch. I turn off the volume buttons on my autistic nephews iPad after setting it to the ideal volume."

Yeah, I don't want to take away the ability to adjust. I simply want to limit the max. May not be doable.

Yeah, I don't want to lock buttons on him. It would be great to be able to set the volume range, if that were possible. For example, pretend the current range is 0-30 dB. Change that to 0-20. The screen slider indicator could even still slide all the way like it does today. The sound output would simply be lower. I just hoped something like that would be possible.

I don't think Apple has this feature anymore. I read a lot of ppl were pretty upset because they used too!! :censored: I bet theres a 3rd party app you can use, but will have to pay for it

If they had it and took it away, I can understand people being upset. I may have to look into apps.

It's at this point that I would love to talk on the phone with an Apple engineer. I bet this control is in there, hidden away.

You are correct. Apple did have this feature but it was taken away after iOS 15 or 16 was launched.

Always afraid to ask Apple related questions here cuz many Korean electronic fans out there all while driving J VINs.

Does anyone know how to recover a dead iPad? Black screen and charging noise occurs when plugging in Lightning connector. Still remains a black screen.
    Thanks.

    Did you try this?

    1. Press and quickly release the volume button closest to the top button.

    2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.

    3. Press and hold the top button until the device begins to restart.

    Or this?

If your iPad turns on but gets stuck during startup
If you see the Apple logo or a red or blue screen during startup, try these steps:

    1. Connect your iPad to a computer. On a Mac with macOS Catalina, open the Finder. On a Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier, or on a PC, open iTunes. Find out which macOS your Mac is using.

    2. Locate your device on your computer.

    3. While your device is connected, follow the steps for your device:
      1. On your iPad without a Home button: Press and quickly release the volume button closest to the top button. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button. Press and hold the top button until your device begins to restart. Keep holding the top button.

      2. On your iPad with a Home button: Press and hold both the Home button and the top button.

    4. Keep holding the button (or buttons) until you see the recovery mode screen.

    5. When you get the option to restore or update, choose Update.

    6. Your computer will download the software for your device. If it takes more than 15 minutes, your iPad will exit recovery mode, and you'll need to repeat steps 2-4.

The second one has worked for me before, but I've had to try more than once. The first one I don't recall if I used that.

If it’s caused by bricked firmware, you can use Apple Configurator and a Mac to revive it.
