I swapped mine out last night. To open your factory fob, simply stick your stock valet key into the horizontal slot in the cavity (after you remove it) and twist the stock fob apart. Don't forget to transfer the rubber gasket/liner from the stock fob over your new AJT, or the transponder will rattle.

The AJT plastic was a little cheaper feeling than I had hoped for, but it's an improvement over the factory fob. The valet key button/spring action isn't as good as the factory fob and could probably be improved in the design.

I also have a couple of AJT key fobs and agree, they feel really cheap. After installing one of them, I went back to the factory key fob and threw a rubber skin on it.

My 13-year-old son said "that's plastic", and asked me how much I'd paid for it. When I told him, both he and my 11-year-old made fun of me. Go figure.

That's funny, sounds like my kids. Thanks for the info also, was thinking about ordering but not sure now. I do like their shift knobs. Anyone have those?

My AJT fob is solid not sure how it feels cheap.

    No flex nothing in mine.

I did buy it 2 years ago when you could get TRD on it so not sure if that makes a difference.

Maybe quality has gone down. For 30 bucks I was expecting something a little more sturdy. No flex, but just seems very light. Looks cool tho.

How does sturdy and lightweight make it feel cheap? Things get lighter and lighter while maintaining strength now days.

My carbon bikes are light and sturdy, so thanks, I understand that. The AJT fob feels like it will break if I drop it on concrete. The spring design on the valet release is extremely poor.

Go ahead and get one and you can decide. I was sharing my opinion on a $30 product.

It’s the same reason Beats headphones add metal weights inside without any functionality, right or wrong, heft gives the impression of solid build quality.

I have one thats why I disagree.

And I've dropped it a million times.

So you want a 1lb key fob? I think beats add it more for function. Tons of people including my self use them at the gym and while active. I've had ones that don't weigh anything and they don't stay on your head.

Answering the question you asked means I want to have a 1lb key fob? You’re gonna pull a muscle trying to reach like that.

I am married now but always wonder if I had a cooler key fob back in the day if things would be different?

I wish they still made these for the runner. My AJT doesn’t support the removable key.

You pretty much transfer everything inside the factory key to the AJT. It can only go in one way.

The only pain in the ass part is cutting out the little chip since its glued in. Just take your time and don't pry.

Email him to make sure but when I ordered mine I couldn’t find the ones that held the valet key either and he sent me this link. https://www.ajtdesign-llc.com/online-store/Injection-Fob-V1-2016-Tacoma-BLACK-p129448603

    I’m
betting it’s the same fob for yours he has two options for the smart key one that holds the key and one that doesn’t. You may just have to buy the buttons from him as well. I bet the boards are laid out the same

Ok I accomplished this BUT not without a trip to the emergency room to get 10 stitches lol
the video is good but after coming back from the clinic to finish without use of 1 finger I used a set of needle nose pliers and wire snipers made it easier to hold and cut out transponder and key
The kickback on a small key no grip results in medic care lesson learned razor blades are real sharp
