Hey everyone! Looking for some advice on tires. In the next few months I am going to get some new tires with my stock ones ready to hit their miles. No lift currently on my 18 sr5 and I don’t plan on lifting it anytime soon (potentially a leveling kit down the line). Looking to just either keep the same size 265/17 or maybe push it to 275 if I can get them on with no rubbing. I just want something a little more rugged. This is my daily driver but we camp about 4 times a year and go up to Tahoe about five times a year. Have had Toyo AT 2s on my Tacoma in the past but looking at toyo AT3s and Nitto Grapplers. Unless anyone can shed light on another great option. Here is how it currently sits. Thanks for any advice from all the wise people on this thread!

Lots of good options out there. I went with Goodyear Duratracs in factory size. If you like Toyo there seems to be a lot of people happy with the AT3. You can read thread after thread on here about tires. It really comes down to your needs and personal preference.

I've had wildpeak, Toyo in the past 4runner and Tundra. Just put General Grabbers ATx E rated, and very happy with the snow traction. Some limited mud and lots on highway miles. All the tires you are looking at are all great options. Your runner looks NICE!

Hankook Dynapro AT2 have always been my go-to tires, and run them on my Patriot and F150. I've also heard a lot of good things about the General Grabber ATX as well. Those are what I'm going to be putting on my 4Runner.

Had Nitto Terra Grapplers previously, but really loving my Cooper AT3 4S'. A lot of guys pass on them because they don't look super aggressive, but their performance so far has been fantastic.

I tried the Cooper AT3 4S two years ago and didn’t like them. They didn’t balance well and the feel on hard smooth pavement (under 40 mph) was weird. It’s hard to describe, but I could feel the buzzing of the tread blocks in my hands and seat. I had them on for almost 30 days then traded them in for Michelin LTX AT2 (free trade benefit at America’s Tire), which I really like.

I wanted to like the Coopers but didn’t. Although they looked good and performed well on pavement, dirt, and sand, I couldn’t get over that feeling at low speeds on pavement.

Do you notice anything like this?

Ridge grapplers here, my favorite tire so far. I’ll probably get another set after my current ones wear out. Almost no road noise, ride great, do great off roading and still look decently new after 20k miles. I’ll check out the yokohama geolander mt’s if I do decide to switch though.

I haven't noticed those issues at all. I've been impressed with their traction and performance in all conditions/speeds. Balanced up perfectly too. I could see the Michelin being among the smoothest/quietest tires available though.

Tires are funny that way, you'll find ten people that swear by one and then ten others that absolutely hated the same thing haha.

Guess I’m old school. Still a big fan of BFG KO2s. Quiet on the highway and great in snow and mild off-roading.

I have a set of Toyo AT3's and have been happy with them. They have held up well to a season of off-roading and traveling. They have good traction in most conditions.

I have no experience with the Nittos, so no input there.

Of course Wildpeaks are always worth considering. They're very popular, with minimal complaints.

For size, 275's are said to fit without trimming. The 2 possible drawbacks are a small variety of tires to choose from in that size, and that some of the tires offered in that size are only offered in LT load ranges, which are heavier than SL tires.

    So true!

It is hard to beat the Goodrich KO2s. Very quiet on the highway and a good all around off-road tire. If your 4R is strictly for off-road use, there are likely better choices, but for driving in all conditions, the KO2s are very good.

Love my Cooper AT3 XLTs 285/70/17. Better than stock Bridgestones.

Thanks everyone for all the great feedback! Leaning towards AT3s but still have a few more months more than likely until I get them on.

Bigger A/T LT Tires, Slight Lift, Sliders, Rack, Lights, etc.
I suggest you go with a SL aka P tire in the stock size. They look great in the A/T variety with a level aka TRD Pro look, weigh less, cost less, and ride nicer.

Thanks for all of the feedback everyone. Pulled the trigger on Falken Wildpeaks 265/70R17 standard load for both my 4Runner and the wife’s. Local 4wheel parts was having a sale 170 per tire and free install for both cars. Couldn’t pass it up.

Enjoy! I loved my P265 Wildpeaks... except that I got a few bad ones from Falken (that, or more likely, not all employees at Discount Tire have the same balancing skills) so I ended up having to warranty all 4 and replace them due to balancing issues. I am still on Wildpeaks, but in a different size, now.

If you get the truck and are having a little shimmy around 60 MPH.. don't give up. It might take some effort to get them balanced, even maybe going to another shop besides 4WP. Apparently it's just hard to balance these things, and I don't think many shop workers put much effort into it.

I absolutely suggest you "step on their toes," which of course is not enjoyable to do, and ask them if they line up the painted dots on the new tires with your wheel valve stems. This is required for proper balancing... and no, they did not do this at Discount Tire until I pressed them to. They at first claimed that it is not necessary when "road force balancing." Of course, there is no logic to that. There is no reason that the dot shouldn't be lined up, period. Even though they, at first, said it wasn't necessary... do you think it was done when they finally managed to get the tires balanced? You betcha.
