IMG_1765.jpg IMG_1770.jpg IMG_1764.jpg Hey there- was involved in accident and got t-boned/side swipped! The metal from other driver literally ripped though my drivers side door all the way through into inside door jam. Will the total it?

My 2010 was totaled with similar hit but a little bit more damage back in 2021, but I got side airbag deployed.

Easy repair. You'll be without a vehicle for about three weeks, more or less. If it was the other person's fault, ask for a rental (basic transportation) while your vehicle is being repaired.

You haven't filled out your location in your profile, which would help people answer questions like this.

Yes. No. Maybe. It really depends on a lot of factors. Fair market value, cost of repairs, and even where you're located. I think I would hope for it to be totaled. Repairs are going to be a long process if not. Hopefully you don't owe more than it's worth.

Sorry for what happened, gld you were safe, hope works out the best way possible for you. Curious, would a 20* slider prevent body damage in this instance?

@java not likely. The vehicle isn't flat, it's convex at the doors; meaning, the door skin is further out than the rest of the vehicle (rocker, portion below the door, or the top of the door frame at the roof). The other vehicle will hit the door before it will hit the slider. The slider would have to stick out pretty far, like the step in the picture; however, the other vehicle, if a truck or something similar, its bumper will be higher than the step/slider anyway. You can see, the step (nerf bar) was damaged and pushed in as well. No real way to protect the door.

You'll need two doors (remove/install, remove/replace trim), tie down and pull (not for the frame, but for the rocker; it may say frame set up on the estimate but only because it's the same machine). They may then section the rocker and b-pillar. You'll have paint/corrosion protection (inside the cut section) and painting the parts to match. You'll have blend into the quarter panel and fender and removal/installation/replacement of trim pieces and stickers.

It's kind of nice with a body on frame vehicle, your body (door frame, rocker) is not part of the frame.

Take a deep breath and prepare for slight frustrations in having to get estimates, arrange for a rental, and drop off/pick up of the vehicle.

If the frame is good they will just fix it. A lot cheaper then getting you a new or used one.

Had something similar with my Expedition, $12,000+ worth of work covered.

Oh man, I feel for you, I really do. I just got back from Costco where I literally park as far away from other cars as I can, but when I got back to my truck, an old Chevy truck backed in with its passenger side door about 6” from my drivers door. I had to get in the passenger door and crawl across to the driver’s seat to leave. I can’t help but think it was done intentionally. Classic example of 4Runner envy. Retaliation did come to mind, but at 70, I just let it go.

My wife parks away W/her BMW as I do too, yet @$$ holes insist on being just that!!! WTF?? I, she's NOT asking them to park different & we're willing to walk the extra just to keep inconsiderate people or they kids from door dings!! Just happened Sunday night @ local DQ, POS Hyundai parked right on the pax side of her. Lucky he had to park back do to the retaining wall BUT still the same had Multiple open spots to choose!!
Sorry to hear about your accident :(

Sliders would not have prevented the damage.

Hence the need for some real sliders, i got T-boned with my RSG sliders and barely had any damage. My rear wheel went up over her front end. I had a scratched rear wheel & driver side slider, but that’s about it.

I am going thru this now,
On December 18, 2023 I was stopped in a parking lot when a 'newcomer', who only spoke Urdu, hit my 3rd gen 4Runner at walking speed.
The damage is less than yours, only got rear door, but did crush in the wheel well into the back seat...

I never attempted to use their insurance, instead called my State Farm agent...SF
SF suggested taking it to Caliber Collision...CC

After months waiting to get into CC, I dropped the car off and declined a rent car...

2 months later, I had not heard from anyone and start making calls...

CC submitted a $4900+ bid for damage and SF wanted to total the car and give me $4300 ish...said the ACV of the car was only $4800
I declined, and mentioned the supercharger system cost more than that...
I called my agent, and thru him, got an offer of $3000 paid to me and the car is a total loss...I keep the car and no salvage title

I went to a local body shop and got an estimate for $2700 ish and resubmitted it, waiting on SF to approve that estimate, pay me $2200 and Ill get my car fixed.

SF uses ACV, Actual Cash Value, to determine if the car is worth fixing...
if repair costs exceed 75% of ACV, its not worth fixing...
SF specifically told me that sales on BaT or eBay don't matter to them, only ACV

Your damage may exceed 75% of what insurance company thinks ACV is...

TL;DR: It depends on the insurance company and the body shop, but I bet their first offer is total it and give you an insulting low ball offer

A total but no salvage title, and they paid you out for the total and you're also pursuing a repair claim? Weird.

no, if they totaled my car and took the car and the title, I would get $4400...
Their next option was call it a 'total loss' they pay me $3000...
I keep the car and the title, but its written off the insurance company

I've had the car 20 years and don't intend to get rid of it...

I want them to pay to fix the car, less my deductible, and not call it a total loss

Something to bear in mind with sliders, it may protect the body work in some accidents, but knowing how the cookie will crumble in a car accident is impossible to know.

A car that is lower than frame mounted sliders could either pick you up slightly, or it could flip you over completely. Lots of speed isn’t necessary for vehicles to flip in road accidents, especially when hits are to things that don’t deform.

If you get hit by another SUV, which are more numerous than cars, they probably wont touch the sliders.

I've paid for frame sections because the integrated, frame mounted, hitch was bent.

I'm going to be the naysayer here. Regardless of what the body shop says, it will never be like it was. They will have to pull and patch certain parts, replace the door skins and lots of other trim parts. Unless your insurance company hires Jay Leno's restoration crew, you would be better served getting it totaled. My '18 had front corner, grill and inner/outer damage plus a bent body mount from a deer hit. $13K repairs and it was never right again. There were leak issues and it never handled the same again. I'm guessing that it $12-15K in damage, and your 4R is probably worth $25K, so it doesn't approach the total threshold. If they do repair it, consider a diminished value claim for your insurance because regardless of the quality of repair, it will always show up on a VIN search and it will be worth less than a zero accident 4R.

First party claims (collision) usually exclude diminished value. That's something you often have to pursue through the at-fault party.

Your damage does not appear to be structural, but for the rocker/b-pillar. It should be a very easy repair. Also, you don't need door skins. You need doors.

I also have a 2017 4runner. I hope I do not get hit hard enough to total it as LA area traffic is wild.
I do not want all the electronic "Safety" equipment mandated by Feds starting with 2020 model years all vehicles. 2019 is the last year our 4runners were built without all that "safety" stuff.
There is an excess of electronic gizmos in the 2017 and way to much for my liking with 2020 on!
If forced to replace, I will look for well maintained 2019 or earlier.
