So I have a '96 Limited 4x4, 270k miles so far, and I have been trying to track down this AC problem for a little bit now. The AC doesn't go on and at first I tried basic things like checking refrigerant/recharge and the gauge read way too much pressure. I let some out and got it back down to normal but the main problem seems to be that the system won't actually go on. Every time I try and press the AC switch, the light goes on for a split second and then the 10A AC fuse in the engine bay blows out and I have to replace it. I tried doing the jump switch method to check if it was a problem with the pressure in the system blowing out the fuse but when bypassing it by sticking a pin in the switch it still has the same exact issue. The blower motor works fine, fan goes on, all the other fuses are good/been replaced including heater, 30A power, Accessories, etc. so not sure if its that. The button itself works, but there is no power going to the button hence why it won't go on. The other thing is that the belt just snapped off recently from the AC and the crankshaft, so I'm wondering if that there could be a problem with maybe the compressor is stuck/not spinning or bad and thus the fuse keeps blowing out or something like that. The only thing I can think of would be to take apart the dashboard and check if there is a short somewhere but that seems like not very likely considering it looks like all the wires from the button at least and the engine bay seem to be bundled up nicely and not tampered with. I recently replaced ground wires from the battery to the body, and the trunk ground is Ok. battery is good etc. Any help would be super awesome, thanks.
TLDR everything electronically seems mostly fine except this AC doesn't turn on when I press the switch, and if it does it blows a fuse instantly.

If your belt snapped, I'm guess your compressor froze up. I would pull the compressor.

Not fully versed in AC but I did have mine lock up and the belt burnt up. Replaced the whole compressor. Luckily it was just a bad pulley so no fragments in the system. If you have an internal problem, you're looking at the whole system needing replacement due to metal fragments. Bottom line, I think you need to verify the compressor. That blown fuse is trying to tell you something major is wrong.
