Hi all, new to this thread, but have had my 16 4Runner since new. I’ve noticed increasing undercarriage rust despite keeping everything clean even throughout the winter. Wondering how bad this is compared to others…car shops have never said anything about it. Not sure what my options are at this point if it is that bad

Keeping it clean is not nearly as important as keeping it lubed. Rust needs to be blocked from oxygen. Oil is one thing that does that. People on here use WD40, fluid film, Waxoyl, etc. personally, I need to get on it myself on my 2019.

It doesnt look bad to me. The welds always start rusting because the slag isnt removed before painting, so it quickly chips off taking the paint with it. Even though it’s not bad, if you plan to keep it for a long time, you need to get on it with a rustproofing program of some sort. Im using woolwax. Coated inside and out of every part of the frame and crossmember.

And for the love of all that is good and right, remove the KDSS cover to clean and check the area frequently. If I had KDSS I’d probably pack it full of bearing grease lol.

Looks fine to me. Use WOOL WAX. Inside the frame rails and crossmember, then spray the outside twice per year. Done.

For under carriage rust always first owner to blame. And AC drain.

Looks normal for a vehicle that doesn't live in the south or southwest. I wouldn't let it get any worse though, I would address that with some sort of a rust preventative treatment underneath before next winter rolls around.
