Howdy from Texas! My best buddy recently purchased a gen1 '89 4runner and asked me for some help with bird-dogging a few fixes. Having worked on and restored cars for a number of years I did a quick search and found your outstanding site that I shared with him. It's already helped him find some workable leads on an intermittent starting problem he's having on that vehicle.

My dad was an engineer for GM until he retired in the early 90's, so growing up we always had a new GM product in the driveway with the obligatory "BUY AMERICAN" bumper sticker on it. My wife grew up driving Toyotas and had a '99 gen3 when we got married. It was not 4wd so I subsequently didn't consider 4runners serious off-road vehicles. Then she purchased my current ride, an '06 Limited 4x4 V8 with all the bells and whistles - what a great vehicle! If GM made vehicles of this quality and durability I never drove one. It currently has 275k miles on it an drives almost like new with very minimal interior wear to boot. My wife currently drives our 3rd 4runner, a 2014 gen5, and our youngest son is on his second gen3 (our old '99 saved him from injury in a T-bone accident that sent it to a new owner who has subsequently rebuilt it - it's still going strong after almost 400k miles).

My other passion is restoring old Willys Jeeps from the 40's and 50's (currently working on a '54 CJ-3B and a '63 CJ-5 MkIII). I used to restore the occasional vintage Mercedes Benz SL model that followed me home but those vehicle have gotten way to pricey for this Texas boy.

    Here are our three 4runners:

I'm looking forward to trying to learn all you have to know (and hopefully sharing what I can)!
