I'm new too Forum. Have 2005 Sport Edition (original TRD) with 330k miles. This is my 10th 4 Runner in a row since 1999 and drove all at least 275k miles. So you could say I consider them the best vehicles built.

NOW... on 2005 Only repair is alternator at 310k. Did trans and diff fluids every 60k. Engine every 10 k with synthetic after 90k. Slick50 treatment every 50k after 150k.
Did Toyota 400 point check at 265k and was told just barely broken in. Although I did mountain and snow driving 80% of miles have been highway. First brakes were at 265k. THAT'S ALL THE GOOD NEWS!

    The Bad.
Suspension getting lumpy but no leaks. Probably should replace all the struts.

Oil leaking from some gaskets (head gaskets and timing chain, Toyota $2500 estimate) at about a half quart every 8k miles. Doesn't seem that much vs cost.

Front stabilizer bushings and arms need replacement ($500). Must get done

Bottom line: New TRD 4Runner is $60k unsure about Hybrid.
$20-25k could rebuild and paint my 2005. I'm not rich but could afford either. Just seem MR SPORT could be worth the attention and become a classic.

    WHAT'S YOUR THOUGHTS....

    Just me.

I'm never attached to my vehicles. I do miss some more than others but I would never dump money into something with 300K. And absolutely will never be $20k in a 20 year old 4Runner.

I mean if your frame is good and rust free, nothing wrong with ‘rebuilding’ your current 4Runner. Would be cheaper overall than a new 4runner, plus insurance would be way cheaper, remember that hybrids have premium insurance rates (was literally just told this by AAA when I was on the phone with them because I asked why my wife’s 2015 Lexus hybrid premium was like 4 times more than any of my other vehicles).

however you stated that you’ve had 10 4Runners since 2009 so are you sure this is ‘the one’ you want to dump money into?

25k can get you a Gen 5 10-15 model 4runners with half the miles in more than decent condition.

I’m curious about the Slick 50 treatment every 50K after 150K. It’s been along time since I’ve heard anyone mention Slick 50. Has anyone else used Slick 50 on their high mileage 4 Runner? If so…. I’m gonna add it to my maintenance agenda starting at 150K.

Welcome. It's your money. With repairs, you need to weigh out the money to be spent and the cost of replacement. You can put a price on sentiments, that's cool, but keep it reasonable so it doesn't sink you.

My advice is to keep it a business decision. With sentiment being a certain part/price you're willing to get nailed for it. Honestly no one but you is gonna have that part of the equation in a sale or repair.

The way I took his comment is $25k will cover basically everything being brand new (rebuilt engine/trans,etc) as well as paint… once done he has a ‘new’ 2005 4Runner so repairs wouldn’t be as much of an issue.

My comment still stands though as if this ‘the one’ to dump that kind of money into.

I'm still having trouble with the numbers. Ten 4Runners over 15 years @ 275k miles minimum per 4R (2,750,000 miles total). That's 183k miles per year, or 3500 miles per week.

Keep in mind that you’ll lose the option to use 4WD unlocked unless you go for a Limited trim 5th gen.

If you kept it to the mechanical bits, I’d say it’s worth it - get other quotes too since the dealer can typically run high.

But of course you’re comparing you high mileage, known history versus a newer, lower miles model with less history. If we’re talking 20k though I’d say it’s worth moving up and getting side airbags and whatnot.

Still around 110k/year, or 300 miles a day. You travel a lot?
