2WD for 4WD

Newbie here ,Can a 95 4Runner with 2WD be converted to 4WD using OEM parts ? If you asked why didn't I just get 4WD Runner the answer is I got the 4Runner in somewhat good condition and running for $100 and couldn't pass it up.

 

The short answer is yes, are you going to do the work your self?

Going to start hunting down parts in junkyards in my area. Seen some crashed runners 2nd gen not far from me. Thank for the quick response.

 

I would opt for a solid axle if I was going to do that much work.

 

Curious...did you ever do your conversion? If so, how difficult was it? I'm looking into options to do the same...just wondering if it is worth the effort. Same as you, I got a great deal on a 2002 2wd with very low miles.

 

I've never looked underneath on a 2WD, but I'd imagine you'd need a whooooole lot of parts to make that conversion. I'm sure you'd need a new transmission crossmember since the 4WD crossmember mounts to the bottom of the transfer case. I'd guess you'd need a transmission too since it not a divorced transfer case and I doubt the 2WD trans would match up with the TC interface. Of course you'll need a transfer case, front prop shaft, and the front diff for whatever config you go with (OEM ADD, OEM manual hubs, or solid axle). I Regarding 4scooter19's comment, I'd seriously consider looking into a solid axle if you're going to put in this much work. If you've got nothing but time, this could be a really neat project and quite the steal. Here's someone who did it on Yotatech with an auto trans.
