I've let this sit too long, as ithe heater core was leaking, so I bought another 2000 4R.

    This 95 4r cranks fine, but won't start. UPDATE - has a V6.

It has a fuel rail bolt near the front of the eng in plain view and I was told if I loosen that and no fuel comes out then that's the problem. So I did, no fuel comes out.

I was told that the fuel pump will click for maybe 5s when the key is 1st turned to on, so a pro mechanic listened to it while I turned the key and he said it sounds fine, ie, making noise.

So, what could it be that is stopping fuel flow, all of a sudden ? Seems like a classic elecvtrical-sitting problem, relay or fuel pump.

I suppose I could take off the fuel line at the tank, and then turn the key on, and see if fuel comes out there. If not, fuel pump. If yes then what ?

My other post for the same 4R is about the leaking heater core.

    Thx

You're on the right track.. process of elimination! If you didn't get gas to come out by the front of the engine... there could be an obstruction in the fuel line, maybe you try getting the old gas out of the system, like drain the tank. You'll need spark, gas, air for combustion, check air filter and housings maybe rodents built nests! You said you talked to a 'pro' mechanic, Rock Auto has fuel pumps for your truck, have a talk with the mechanic, see what you can work out with him. Not all mechanics try to gouge ya. Good luck.

Because the problem developed due to it sitting too long (the worst thing a person can do to a vehicle) I tend to think the fule pump is not pumping, even thought the Pro mech told me it sounded fine.
What kind of noise will the pump, if it is working, make and for how long after I turn the key on ?
Also, I haven't looked under it, how many fuel lines are there on the tank ? Which one is the injection supply ?
    Thx

One of the best things you can do is buy a repair manual for this vehicle. Haynes and Chilton make good repair manuals to troubleshoot and repair all kinds of vehicles. We can go back and forth on this subject for a long time... but times-a-wastin', get the manual and get a fixin'. Good luck

I also have a 4Runner ('99) that wouldn't start. It would start fine first thing in the morning, but wouldn't start once it was warmed up. It had also sat for a long time, in my case over 8 years! It did turn out to be a problem with the fuel pump. The mechanic told me that the mechanism inside the fuel pump that regulated the amount of fuel pumped out, was not working correctly and it was dumping too much fuel at once, causing it not to start. On first glance, the fuel pump was working. But a new fuel pump solved the problem.

I also had a manual that the mechanic was able to use to help him diagnose the problem. He said he read the whole thing. lol

Seems mine has no fuel pressure at the rail. I suspoect the pump, even though the mechanic said it was making noise. I still don't know how long it's suppsoed to make noise for, but, maybe it doesn't matter.

Hook up a pressure gauge and see what the actual fuel pressure numbers are.

38-44psi. Ign. on - 33-38psi. @ idle - 38-44psi. vac. sensing hose off. since you can't start it, the last two don't matter. That's the numbers I found on the web. Hope it helps. Sounds like you may be replacing your pump. Happy New Year.

Either that or I hit the tank with a 2x4 !

Question, can I put an external/elect fuel pump in line ?

Who was the idiot who approved putting electronics inside a fuel tank ???

Hit the tank with a 2X4. Aeromotive makes a internal/external fuel pump, the A1000, it will make the fuel pressure you need via a press. regulator. I have one of these on a race engine, it delivers fuel for sure.

    Thx.
Does this mean, that in general, all internal fuel pumps 'leak' enough fuel so that an external will work ?

    No, bypass and/or return.

    Thx again.
    I'm a little confused.
Does this mean there are at least 2 lines to/from the tank to the engine ?
And does this mean that, if I were to not want to deal with the internal pump, instead put an electric pump in line, that I would not put it on the TO side but the RETURN side instead ? Does this mean there would be no RETURN line any more ?

What does the picture or text say in the REPAIR MANUAL? You did get one, right?

No I haven't yet. Not sure I will. I've bought manuals in the last 60 years of my life and not a one has had a use I can recall. They are usually very general, like, if your vehicle won't start check fuel pressure. Manuals do a good job, but they usually cover so many years and models that they can't be specific enough for me to find of any use. I suppose if I were adjusting valves on a 65 Ford 427 I might need to know the clearance, but my Dad (though deceased now) knew all that by heart. If I don't feel like crawling around under the 4R, I might get the local mechanic to fix the 4R anyways. And as far as spending 12 hours tearing apart the interior to replace the heater core, I'll just go to FL for a month instead, plus I have another 4R anyways, and 10 other vehicles. I have a 74 Ford with a 400 that the timing chain slipped on too. I have to delegate soime of my time to others, sort of like Jay Lenno does but on a different scale.
