Just bought a 07 Limited for my 16 year old son. 250k miles.
Its not my first 4Runner because i love them.
However it is my first vehicle with this many miles. Runs and drives great, but we all know that can change.
I would appreciate any preventative maint advice to keep this beauty rolling.

    Oil ( best hi mileage?
    anything else you recommend

    thank you from michigan

    V6 or V8? Makes a difference.

If it's the V8, I strongly suggest doing the timing belt and water pump, unless you know they were done recently. V6 doesn't have a belt so I would only suggest changing the coolant at the least or maybe the water pump and coolant for piece of mind.

Oil - pick whatever you like. Too many threads on what oil to pick. I personally use Mobil 1 Truck & SUV 5W30 Synthetic and do 6k miles OCI with filter. I have just shy of 340k miles on my V8 4Runner.

Change diff fluid, front and rear or just rear if 2WD. Change tcase fluid as well if 4x4.

I'm a proponent of trans fluid changes, even at higher mileage without prior history. Done mine, along with the trans strainer (internal) 3 times now (twice on the strainer). Using Valvoline MaxLife ATF, which is WS compatible.

Change out the brake fluid too. That should be done about every 2 years or less, depending on the vehicles use.

Check/replace the spark plugs and inspect the coil packs well while your at it. Look for hairline cracks in the coil bodies.

I second everything @xtremewlr mentioned. If you know zero maintenance history also look into (in addition to what was already stated) a new air filter, clean the MAF, clean the throttle body, check for any leaks under the vehicle i.e. steering rack boots (what i'm going through right now), look for worn bushings, etc. How does the suspension feel? May be due for some new shocks. I don't need to deal with it being on in SoCal, but hows the rust looking on the undercarriage? Driveshaft U-joints looking good? Could at least grease them through the zerks.

Just a heads up I have 241k on my v8 and just had the transmission fluid changed without any prior knowledge when it was last done. Shifts smooth now with no adverse side effects.

If you do end up changing the brake fluid now might be a good time to add some stainless steel brake lines. I did on all four corners at like 239k miles and the brake peddle feel is a little more solid.

why do people buy high-mileage oil. There are excellent videos where its been proven to be nothing more than marketing. My son and I were in the auto parts store and he said dad.....look at this...High mileage wiper blades.

Thank you for all the information, i really appreciate it.
I apologize for leaving out the motor:
Its the V6 and unfortunately we don't have any vehicle maint history. Someone also mentioned its not great to jump from conventional to synthetic if you don't know whats been ran you should use a blend. Does that make any sense>?

thank you again for all the great information

Really doesn't make any difference. Use whatever oil tickles your fancy.

This. Blackstone Labs, whose entire business is oil analysis, says “oil is oil” (direct quote, see their FAQs), assuming of course what you choose meets the manufacturer’s specifications. My opinion fwiw is that yes, there may be differences in oil blends, additives, and such, but not enough to have a significant or even detectable effect on longevity or performance as long as you follow the recommended OCI. I personally use Havoline full synthetic in the 6-quart box as I see it as the best value.

We like to think we’re buying a better product but the hard truth is that the engine doesn’t care.

As for maintenance, you might also consider replacing the PCV valve and cleaning the throttle body. Careful on the throttle body bolts, they’re easy to break. Just snug them down. Plenty of YT videos on how to do it and it makes a noticeable difference in how the truck runs.
