Great first post huh - showing how little I know about 4Runners. I did search... a little.

I bought a 2020 Limited yesterday (yeah, fell for that lux interior, also like the front end) but not loving those 20s and low-profile tires. The plan is a little bit of lift and a set of 17" TRDs with 285/70/17s.

But, I've played around with enough trucks to know what happens with little (to no) knowledge... like how going down in wheel size can run into clearance issues. I have NO idea if that's case here - even doubting it's the case. But... that's based on basically nothing.

Anyone done this - dropped from 20s to 17s? Any thoughts, tips, general comments?

    Thanks!

    Oooh look, another mod.....

Talk to this guy @Harringbr99 He has a Limited and modded it (very tastefully I might add), with 17's (I think?):

Plenty have dropped from 20" to 17" wheels. All trims have the same brakes and basic suspension components, so you'll be fine as long as you stick to a similar offset to stock wheels.

You'll need to trim a little plastic to fit 285/70/17's, but plenty of folks run that size without any major work. Wheel offset plays a big part in clearing tires on these vehicles.

I'm sure you'll get a lot of helpful replies, but also look around in the 5th gen sub-forum and the wheels and tires sub-forum for more information.

If you want to enjoy the XREAS comfort go with factory size tires 265/70R17.

I have removed XREAS (a little compromise on comfort) and have 285/70R17. The reason to remove XREAS was the 4x4shop said rear XREAS shocks cannot take something like 1.5 lift in rear. Sometimes regret missing the awesome XREAS comfort but I enjoy the new lifted look and 285 tires.

This is great. Thanks guys! @Borracho Loco, you weren't kidding - @Harringbr99, build is really well done.
@kmeeg, that - XREAS and > 1" lift is now on the list of questions for my shop. Thanks!

I got a second set of rims for winter tires and purchased take-off 17 inch rims from base. Kept to the same overall size, so no issues. Surprisingly, ride quality did not seems to be notably impacted in any way. I expected softer ride and loss of steering precision but neither happened.

I drive a 2022 limited with OEM 17 rims because I wanted more sidewall and more cushion.

No modifications needed. I run stock size tires.

    Zero regrets.

This is awesome. The only thing to look into more is the effect of even a small lift on the XREAS.

    Here's where I'm starting:

I guess I'm just odd. But I like the 20s on the limiteds. They do look better with 275 55 20 tires

@hossler1788, I get it. In stock form, the Limited pulls off a decent "upmarket" look... and I do like that. It's a good-looking truck

So, I'm torn. If this were my only truck or my primary trail truck, I'd be all in on mods. Actually, I'd have gotten the TRD Pro. But I have a slightly mod'ed '06 100 and a slightly more mod'ed '84 Pickup to play in. The rational voice in my head is saying, "Don't spend $3,000+ on wheels, tires, lift (spacers) - leave it alone. But the voice that always wins is saying, "Come on, you've never left anything stock. Just do something really mild and then leave it alone." That's the voice I usually (always) listen to. Oh, and I justify it with "I'll keep the parts so I can put it back to stock."

285/70/17 softens up the Xreas quite nicely. May need a BMC though

+1 on this. After the OP posted the picture of his ride, all I saw was that tan 80's Toyota in the back ground. Now I don't care what he does with his bougee "Limited" LOL. Show us more pictures of that Marty McFly mobile in your driveway!

Ha! That's hilarious. A couple years ago, I found a beater farm truck in middle Georgia. It didn't have a straight panel on it, BUT... the frame was straight, it had zero rust and 59,000 (documented) miles. It had to be bought.

    Fast forward 3 years and:
    - Swapped clean O.E. doors and fenders, paint and body
    - Fresh interior, sound deading, carpet, reupholstered seats, CarPlay and new sound system
    - 3" OME springs, shocks
    - 4.88s, alloy axles, E-locker in the rear, Aussie upfront
    - '84 FJ40 wheels with 33/10.5/15 BFGs
    - ARB bumper, warn winch
    - Custom trayback; Dugan at ACC Garage - owner of a killer Toyota truck and Land Cruiser shop - did the fabricating on the bed. I had the easy part - designing and cardboard mockups.

    It's fun little truck.

Throw in the 5th wheel for the spare and it's a deal!
(kidding... it's the one car/truck that I couldn't imagine selling)

@hossler1788 I like dark wheels on dark cars. I think on bright silver or white, the wheels get lost - even looking like blackholes. This seems to be worse in the bright sun and particularly bad in pictures - where the light meter is set by all that silver, and the wheels fade to black...

The plan (all plans are subject to change without notice) is to get a set of the gloss (not matte) gun metal TRDs. Even those might need to be redone - blasted and powdercoated a lighter/brighter shade of silver. Not body-matched. I do want some contrast. Something like this...

I have a silver limited as well... You should be fine on TRD wheels and 33s with little to no trimming. I had to get a body mount chop because I opted for a negative 10 offset wheel. If you do get some rubbing (most likely in reverse at full lock) ask your alignment guy to get your caster as close to 4 degrees as possible.

I have a '23 Limited with the 20x7 wheels, changed tires to 275/55 ATs. Found a set of 17x7.5 Sequoia wheels that I'm getting powdercoated to match the redwood interior, and have 265/70 ATs on the way. I don't do any offroading, so no need for a lift or bigger diameter tires. The 265/70-17s are like 8mm smaller in OD compared to the 275/55-20s, so that's not going to be noticeable.

These are the 275/55-20s on Limited wheels:

    Tires_275 55_20231226c.jpg

They align perfectly with the splash guards I installed:

    Thanks for the complement.
I think going to the 17” TRD Offroad Wheels was a great way to get into a 7.5” rim that opens a lot of possibilities all the way up to 35” tall tires for only around $550 on eBay in perfect condition. You still gotta buy the tires of your choice, but I know a lot of people that did 285/70r17 with only a fender liner push with those rims and had no rubbing at full flex. I went with the LT 275/70r17 load C Falken Wildpeak AT3W. Even being such a heavy tire it didn’t greatly hurt fuel mileage.
You can also get a couple of different lifts from Cornfed Suspension that let you keep X-REAS and its road manners while giving a 2 / 1 lift which I did.

Have fun with her. That Silver is a beautiful and up-market look! Keep us posted on all you choose to do. Love seeing what others get up to with their rigs.

Or keep the 20” rims with a good AT and get out there and prove to everyone how awesome a bone stock looking LE does on the trails, without popping a tire.

This does all start to feel like that kids book "If you take a mouse to the movies": He's going to want popcorn and if he eats popcorn, he's going need a drink and...

For the truck that does NOT need to be more capable than stock, I'm slowly justifying wheels, tires, lift... but then she's going to need rocker protection and she's going to want a hidden winch and...
