I was able to pick up a new 2024 4Runner last night! I did notice on the car I picked up and on some of the other ones sitting on the lot, there seemed to be a fitment / quality issue with the rear quarter panel area not lining up and with it not being properly made? It was not on all of the 4Runners on the lot (70%/30% had this weird thing vs not), and even on the 3 used ones only on 1 of them.

To me, it looks like the bottom part was not correctly curled to have a proper lip all the way through if that makes sense. From the rear tire to halfway it looks the top edge of the bottom piece was rounded? And then it comes just a straight piece of metal.

Any thoughts on if this will cause any issues / paint issues in the future?image_67127041.jpg image_67151873.jpg

Probably. It also probably means rest of the vehicle was poorly assembled.. made on a Friday, or leading up to Japanese holiday

It looks like it might be a clip issue. Try unclipping the top edge of the bumper and reseat it all down the side

You could pop off that side of the bumper and try to re-seat the bumper skin, maybe it wasn't clipped in properly. I had my rear bumper off yesterday and it took me a couple attempts to get it to seat properly.

Just search for rear bumper removal. It's very easy on these

It’s very easy to pop that part out to maybe check what’s going on

Is the paint in the circled area coming off? I see how the panel puckers or it sticks out a bit but the gap seems enough where the two panels would not rub (unlike the common rear garnish issue on the rear hatch)

I can’t tell if the paint there is messed up or if it’s a reflection

It is a brand new truck - make the dealer fix it. Did they cut you a discount for it? Of course not, they probably charged you a "convenience fee" or some other BS fee or upcharge simply because they actually had one for you to buy. Why should you accept a QC issue like what appears in the pics? That's my thought anyway.

Your post assumes that dealers are any capable. They really really are not and may make the OP’s car worse. Also, they don’t pay for people’s time and inconvenience. I don’t know, seems like something I’d try on my own or leave alone.

I’ll look at my truck later today to see if it has this and report back, though I doubt it as I think I would’ve noticed.
