Off Road magazine published a little blurp on the next gens... Said the Tundra, Tacoma, and 4Runner will all be based on a similar BODY ON FRAME platform code named F1. Said new Tundra will be out 2021 and the Tacoma and 4Runner will follow in 2023. Gave no info on drivetrain or suspension.

Maybe the Tundra will get better gas mileage than a dumptruck this time around?

Looks like they are getting rid of the v8 for the tundra as well. I’ll be interested to see if the future 4Runner is also offered with a 3.5 twin turbo.

It won't be. My guess is yes it will be a 3.5 but there will be no turbos any where near it.

Things I’ve learned, over the years about news like this.

It’s bullshit, it’s speculation and gets people hyped up for no reason other than to get people talking on social media.
Everyone thought the new Tacoma would get the current 4R engine or a diesel option and the went with a Camry engine.

    just say’in.

Hardest part about owning a Tacoma was knowing I had the same engine as a Toyota Sienna. :anonymous:

I know going green is better all around for the environment but it will be sad seeing the V8's disappear. On transmissions, the 5 speeds have been bulletproof, one reason I got the current 4Runner. Will be interesting to see how all these 9,10 and up speed transmissions hold up.

Was shopping half-ton pickups before I decided on the 4runner.

Settled on the Tundra. No way in hell was I going to drive a full size pickup with a 2.7 V6.

Ford has decided that the F-150 is for soccer moms and dads with man buns.

Guy I work with just bought one. He has the whole metrosexual beard going on, doesn't own anything he needs to tow, hires all home improvement projects done, and has no need for a pickup.

He bought the F-150 "for the image". He got the 2.7 V6...

Think what you want but I'm none of the above. Had a 16 and 18 150. 16 has your wuss 2.7in it. 18 had a 3.5. I wished it had the 2.7. Damn thing was on steroids. Put a tuner on and punks in there rice cars were shocked and when you dont floor it I was getting 23 all day long in a half ton. 27 hwy when driving like grandpa. Dont knock it till you try it...

I would be surprised if Toyota puts a Turbo on any of their main stream vehicles. In all honesty with my limited research of turbo engines it appears that they are high maintenance and you have to change the oil in them frequently. I just not sure Toyota will go down that path...they like the what works path. My father owned a couple of Ford 550 turbo diesel dump trucks for our masonry company and they were nothing but problems. The F150 Ecoboasts were tempting but after reading the only engine I would get from them is the 5.0. I would buy a Tundra in a heartbeat if Toyota could get the highway MPG at 21. But I also feel that 3.5 is going to make its way to the 4Runner...with great sadness. I have a long-standing relationship with the Toyota dealer I use and they have told me they would rather not sell me the Tacoma with the 3.5 because I would be very disappointed.

I got rid of my Taco after 10 months because engine / drivetrain was awful to put it nicely.

Well then don't look at Lexus, which is very mainstream and Toyota, because the Lexus twin turbo 3.5 V6 will most likely be going into a Tundra very soon. An I agree with you on the 5.0 Ford. It's the only one I would get.

Interesting... I guess this is going to be the future of the car market. I hope they find a way to make better turbos than Ford. But again I do have very limited knowledge on turbo engines.

BTW, the oil change interval for the F-150 Ecoboost is 10k miles, unless the Intelligent Oil Life Monitor indicates otherwise.

I have heard that, but I have seen UOAs at Bob is the Oil Guy that does indicate they should not go that long. My cousin just purchased a 5.0 F150 ad originally he was all gun-ho about the 3.5. He changed his tune after seeing similar information that I saw. It is the internet so there is a very good chance what I read was complete BS...but without being an expert I feel that its a much more complex system that forces air into the motor. More complex/forced anything equals more problems in my opinion especially for fluids.

Ford is winding down the 5.0. Raptors and limited come stock now with a HO 3.5 EcoBoost. People aren't happy about it but wont have a choice soon. Also coming from the 150 forum the new 5.0 is being avoided by those who know. Has oil consumption and other engine issues. The ecos have more torque and hp, only downside is no great exhaust solution if your into that

And that's what really irks me about today's corporate overlords.

It used to be that the customer was always right and that consumer choices drove selection. Now it seems that consumers are told what we can buy and what we can't. Either by corporate bean counters or the federal government.

How many people do you know actually want 1.6 gallon toilets, or LED light bulbs that cost 5x as much and last the same amount of time?

How many people do you know want diesel motors in SUVs and pickups? Consumers have been clamoring for a simple, rugged, affordable diesel-powered SUV or small pickup for decades, yet the EPA has made them impossible to produce.

Now, Ford is telling it's customers that you don't need a V8 in your half-ton pickup. Well, maybe there are thousands of customers who don't want a turbo V6 in their pickup no matter how good the numbers are.
