Hello everyone I just picked up my 2023 4runner. After driving it for a few days I decide to fill up the tank and only to realize upon opening the gas cap the inner fill hose neck there is this white plastic mold looking around the metal inside the hose neck. Not sure if its there to keep a tighter fit when filling gas Is this new for 2023? My sister 2022 4runner doesn't have this? Reasons why I'm asking this question is due to safety concerns if one day maybe if the plastic might break off and fall into the tank. Thank you and hope to hear from everyone's response soon.

Just checked my 2018 and it doesn’t have the white plastic insert that you described.

I have it too on my 23, its normal. I think its there to prevent someone from syphoning your gas, but Im not 100% sure.

Maybe a new way to reduce cost. My 19 doesn't have this.

My 21 looks like a regular tube, judt like old cars of yesteryear.

Maybe it’s what you said, some anti siphining device. Or an anti-dribble device. On anti-static device. Or a anti-click-clack device. Possibilities are endless.

Never noticed it, but my 23 Pro also has it. I think someone above is correct, it is some type of anti-siphoning device.

Probably an anti siphon since the fuel door doesn’t lock.

If it's there for that reason, why did it take Toyota 13 years to add it? 5th gen fuel doors haven't locked from 2010 to the present day.

Sadly probably for the same reasons they let the frames rust.

I don't think that would stop anyone from siphoning fuel.

Yep let them drill a hole in the tank while they take off the Catalytic converter. They might get a spark though so thief beware

My 2022 SR5 Premium DOES NOT have that white insert in the fuel filler neck. We bought it pre-owned / certified from our local Toyota dealer.

I can run the gas pump nozzle full bore to fill the tank, and I just let the fill nozzle click itself off when the tank is full, no problems. That insert is bizarre. Is yours a California vehicle (sold new in California) by any chance? California sometimes has stupid rules that apply to a lot of consumer goods that get sold there, vehicles included. I bet that insert will pull right out. But if you are under a warranty, maybe best to let the dealer look in to it. But your problem filling your tank does not sound normal.

How is that to stop siphoning??? If the fuel fill nozzle fits in, why would a siphon hose not???:notsure: Yeah just looked, it's there:popcorn:

Could it be to keep you from putting diesel in your tank by mistake...

The anti-siphon features are baffles inside the filler tube, not what is being discussed here.

It looks like a preventative measure to make sure you don't use diesel as diesel spouts are a larger diameter than gas. My 19 has the same feature, it's just that it's a tapered inlet with the restricted diameter being further down the inlet. That looks like a plastic insert in to the old inlet creating the restriction closer to the inlet opening.

They probably had a few owners who put diesel in anyway with the old design in states that don't have the vapor sealed pumps where people would just stand there holding the pump handle and decided they needed further idiot proofing.
