2022 4 Runner ORP. 1,900 miles. The pre-collision system yellow light on the dash illuminated a few days ago. It will not go away. The digital screen in the options menu shows that PCS is "On." When I try to set adaptive cruise control it says "radar is not available" and will not start cruise control. However, Lane departure alert works just fine and will chime when I swerve.

I have searched countless threads and the closest thing i could find was a thread involving a Innova 5210 scanner that read ABS codes. I bought it yesterday and no codes were stored unfortunately. I also have read that a zero point calibration is needed. The steering wheel is slightly off center. I do have appointment with Firestone to get a wheel alignment done tomorrow morning. The Front grill radar and windshield camera are spotless clean.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue? Just trying to get a better understanding and some advice or troubleshooting tips on this before i make an appointment with the dealer.

Any chance you installed the VLED footwell lgihts?

I messed up one the TSS sensor wires in the A column. and that trigged the TSS error

How dirty is the TSS sensor? Salt or dirt on it? I don't have it on my 4runner, but have a similar option on the grand cherokee.

If the sensor gets dirty from dust, mud, road spray - it will not work. Even rain and snow will sometimes shut it off. It's essentially a radar signal - it tries to send a signal out and measure the time to return to calculate distance, closing speed, etc. If it's dirty, it can't see the return signal and shuts itself off as a safety precaution.

Truck is 100% completely bone stock. No aftermarket TRD grill, electronics or anything.

It definitely gets wet being in the Northwest. Even after cleaning it though it still wont turn off. Its parked in a parking garage so i feel like its something else. I just wish it was something simple that I'm missing. What throws me off is Lane departure alert works so clearly the systems "Eyes" seem to be working.

Sorry, just re-read your original post that said the sensors are spotless clean.

My thoughts: the TSS radar is probably controlling precollision and adaptive cruise control - that's where the issue lies. If lane departure is still working, I'm pretty sure that comes from the cameras in the rearview/windshield whatever (I don't have lane departure- this comes from my reading).

It’s annoying, had that happen today. Wet roads in below zero temps, dirties the front plate (a build up of crap). Will have to read up about disabling the radar follow to see if I can just use regular cruise control.

Lane departure uses camera from the windshield behind the windshield mirror.

You should search or read user manual (no disrespect), but I think I've read if you hold the button for turning on cruise control down for 3+ seconds it will go into regular cruise control rather than adaptive.

You are 100% correct. I can confirm. Holding down the button for a few seconds will switch the green light icon on the dash from adaptive icon to the regular cruise control icon. I figured that out yesterday playing with cruise control.

Thx guys. In the past I’ve read manuals for vehicles before I even buy them. This time around most of my reading has been on upgrades

Why is the steering wheel off center? If your new truck came like that, then take it to the dealer, not Firestone. If something else happened like you bumped a curb or hit a big pot hole, then that information might help folks figure out your issue.

Also, most vehicles have the tie rods marked at the factory. If you get an alignment, the dealer will know you altered it. They could possibly deny warranty. Far-fetched, but it's possible.

Not far-fetched at all. I dont see the need to trouble-shoot a problem this big on your own for a brand new vehicle. I wouldn’t touch a thing…take it to a dealer and tell them the safety system isnt working.

Something tells me OP isn't being 100% forthcoming. Steering wheels don't become off center/crooked all by themselves.

Try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes... if that doesn't solve it take it back to the dealer. No sense worrying about it since its still so new.

I bought it certified pre-owned. No light when I took it home. Steering wheel was slightly off center but it wasn’t a big deal to me at the time. I Ccurrently put about 240 miles only since I bought it 10 days ago. Was down to its first 1/4 tank of gas since I owned it. I don’t really have a reason to not tell the truth. Didn’t even put a full tank of gas through it yet!!

I currently have an appointment at Toyota on Monday morning. Will update for future thread searchers who may fall into a similar situation.

Certified pre-owned is better then new as far as warranty goes.

I bought my wife's car, and was driving home after, I have driven 200 miles and I finally realized the steering wheel is very crooked. I spent atleast and hour looking over the car along with a 30 minute test drive and I didn't notice it until I was 2 miles away from home....shit happens. I'm sure your dealer will take care of this issue.

I had this issue, mine started while by pulling a car with a car dolly. Uncertain as to why, the weight was within spec but after pulling onto the interstate on-ramp the steering wheel was slightly off, shortly after I got the warning lights. The dealer did a steering calibration, no issues since even after towing with the same set-up. The dealer or I could not offer an explanation.

Update: waited at Toyota for 3 hours. They came back with code c120a which they said it won’t allow them to clear. They are calling corporate Toyota to get more troubleshooting solutions on how to resolve the code.

From my simple search on the forums it seems like this code will clear with a recalibration of the crawl control system and a zero point calibration. We will see what they come up with.

Best of luck with Toyota. From the start this sounded like a software problem, or an electrical component failure. I'm a big fan of the 4Runner but I don't think Toyota is really on the ball when it comes to software and these active safety systems generally. The drivetrain is as bulletproof as they come. But Toyota just isn't best in class when it comes to the computerized stuff. See the rash of battery failures on vehicles like the Rav 4 after they introduced Safety Sense. Happened to me too on my 4Runner -- but no issues there at all after Connected Services expired. I also had a total shitshow with the remote start system, which was clearly from bad software. It's a challenge across the industry, but ironically GM seems to excel in this area.

Another update: Toyota performed a recalibration of the radar and camera and received another fault indicating “operation of millimeter wave radar sensor is abnormal.” They also noticed water inside the connector. Blew it out with air. It was performed again a 2nd time and resulted in the same code.

They have a new radar sensor on the way delivered by tomorrow. Should be doing a full calibration tomorrow and getting more results.

All covered under warranty. The radar alone is $800. Probably will be in the thousands by the time this saga is over.

Final update: Received the truck back today. Everything is fixed. They replaced the front radar and did the recalibration. After replacement they received an error saying it was at too high of an angle. After further investigation they seem to think the front bumper was replaced during its short 2,000 mile history. No report on carfax or in Toyotas system. I honestly couldn’t tell by looking at it from the outside. They did say it doesn’t look original. So that was the slightly disappointing news.

end result, all lights are gone. All of the safety features work again. Car is back to the way it was. All covered under warranty. Just wanted to give a final update for anyone searching. A very unusual case in my opinion and bad luck or bad timing on my part.

+1. I know the OP had a legitimate issue that had to be fixed at the dealer, but in the first couple months of owning it I have worked out that any time the front sensor and camera get caked with sticky wet snow it will turn off. Happened again on the way to work this morning.

Weird thing is that cruise still still radar ready, so I think it may use a combination of radar and camera or PCS.
