When I came home last night, my 2020 4R TRD OR was working fine with no issues. I started my 4R remotely this morning with the key fob and let it warmup (which I do every morning). When I went outside to leave for work and opened the door of the 4R, the door unlocked by touching the handle as usual, however, the engine continued to run when I opened the door which was not normal. I knew something was up and when I put the 4R into gear, the engine stopped and would not restart. All of the dashboard lights, radio, etc. are working. I know the battery is fine. I tried leaving the vehicle, using the fob to lock the doors and then entering again, but still won't start. Also, the 4R will no longer start remotely using the key fob. I had to take my wife's Rav4 and leave for work before I could try anything further.

When I get home tonight, I will try to start it once again. If that does not work I plan on disconnecting the battery, letting the 4R sit for 20min and reconnecting the battery again. I have a code reader that I could also try to clear any codes that the 4R may be showing? Anybody have any additional suggestions as to what to do next?

Is it a factory remote start system?

Can you disable the remote start system by pulling the fuse for it (if on its own circuit) and see if the car will start.

The 4R has the factor remote start system. I have not pulled any fuses and am not sure if there is a fuse solely for the remote start.

IMO, since it’s a factory installation, I would have it towed into dealership and let them troubleshoot and repair if that’s an option for you.

I’m not positive but I think Toyota would pay the towing bill since it’s still under warranty.

Location? Profile is handy to let others know.

If you are in a cold location is it possible the door sensor 'pin' is frozen stuck in the closed position (that would account for why opening the door didn't turn off the engine)?

I have no actual knowledge of that system but that one particular comment struck me.

Related: the system shuts the engine off every time you open the door? That would be... aggravating. I've never had a remote start so IDK?

The temperatures this morning were a few degrees below freezing, not super cold. The 4R has always started previously in equally cold and colder temperatures. I don't really think that there is a door sensor 'pin' that is affected as the vehicle normally stop when the door hand senses a touch on it. Today the touch sensor unlocked the 4R but the engine did not stop as per normal. I suspect that something happened with the electronics. Am hoping that either sufficient wait time or a battery disconnect will work to 'reset' the system so that it works. I really dislike the modern electronics in vehicles.

I’m with you on disliking modern electronics in vehicles.

It’s certainly disheartening to have a brand new vehicle with electrical gremlins. I hope you are able to pin it down.

Well after sitting all yesterday morning and afternoon, I tried starting the 4R when I got home from work and......everything works fine again. Don't know why, maybe it needed some alone time to think about things and reset the electronics. In any case I am hoping this was a one off experience and I don't have to deal with it again. (Started fine again this morning also.)
