Hello everyone. Hope this is the right place. So I am having an issue right now with my 2020 4Runner TRD Pro. Randomly sometimes while driving it will suddenly lose power with all the lights go on the dash and then turn off. I am able to still break and once I come to a complete stop, the engine will turn off. Thought it was the battery, but the battery is the right charge and secured tight with the terminal cables. What else could be wrong here? It's pretty scary now driving it so just gonna keep it at home. Dealer says could be fuel pump or an electrical issue with the computer, but that is hard to believe for only 36k miles. Have to wait a week for an appointment. Anyone had a similar issue?

Did you get the fuel pump replaced per the safety recall?

Not sure if you’re model year was included.

There was a fuel pump recall on some years.

So, once you stop, and it shuts down, will it restart and act normal again?

Thanks for the replies. No, I did not get it replaced. Didn't know there was a recall. If I looked it up now it looks to be affected for 2018 - 2019 and not 2020 unless I am mistaken? Guess I'll dig more into my VIN right now.

Yes, once the engine shut up, I just push the start button and it goes back to normal.

I would show up to the dealer without an appointment, and tell them to figure it out if it still qualifies for the warranty. You may not due to mileage.....

That's weird. Hopefully something simple. I might do what @TrailGuy2016 said and just take it to a dealer. I would hope it would be covered under the powertrain warranty. They should have to give you a loaner.

After I got my fuel pump recall performed, I lost power on the freeway. I limped it to a gas station, but it would not restart. They had improperly installed an outing.

The pump recall did end before '20.

It would be odd if the pump were going out to not throw one or more codes - a/f, fuel pressure, pump duty cycle or something. Maybe an electrical gremlin with an easy fix, I hope.

That sounds downright spooky. If you all of a sudden you lose power, the results could be catastrophic.
Please keep us posted and wish you the speediest of resolutions.

Sounds electrical.... Happened to me once on freeway (old van). The battery cable was intermittently loose. In another salvage title vehicle that i drove... it loses power when auto headlight comes on. Weird.

Just throwing this out there - do you have rodents (mice, rats, squirrels) where you live? Symptoms sound like chewed wires in the engine bay...

Hello all, I was wondering how this turned out? What was the fix?

I am having the same issue on a 2019 limited. About 48k miles. It will randomly lose all electrical power while driving. The engine will die and restart at higher speeds. A few times it died and rolled to a stop then had to restart. The whole car goes black with everything off. It’s completely random and doesn’t really have a pattern of any kind. no other issues, no error codes.

One dealership suggested a full electrical diagnostic service that was going to cost a couple hundred $$. I’m worried they can’t recreate the problem because it’s so random. I have tried most of the cleaning, tightening, jiggling, inspecting that was mentioned above except for the voltage testing.

Well this sucks to read and sounds way more like a crappy Jeep Commander issue or some other crap product!

    Sucks!

I’d check under the hood for rodent damage to the wiring. Aftermarket mods and rodents chewing up wiring seem to be the top two when it comes to electrical issues on newer 4Runners.

Too many..... Performance: • Magnusum Supercharger • Gibson exhaust with dual black tip • Pedal Commander * PowerBrakes • Suspension – Old Man Emu BP-51 front and back with Medium load coils • Tires: AT3 Faulken Wildpeak – 285/70/17 • Wheels: Relations Race Wheels, RR7-H with -12 offset • Full roof rack and ladder by Westcott Design (removed the stock Yakima basket) • Molle storage panels by Rago fabrication • Front light brackets by Rago • Illuminator light bracket by Rago (roof rack location) Lights • Morimoto front and back with sequential signals • Morimoto fog lights and side mirrors with sequential signals • 40” Baja design light bar for roof rack • 20” S8 Baja design driving combo (winch location) • Squadron sport baja design ditch lights • S2 Chase lights by baja designs (mounted on roof) In the bay: • Odyssey 34-PC Battery • SDQH Aluminum billet battery terminals and bracket • Switch Pro 9100 with aluminum tray • Anytime front and back camera • ARB twin compressor Recovery & Protection: • Smittybilt X20 synthetic rope winch • Factor 55 fairlead and flatlink • Southern Style Off-road (SSO) low profile bumper • SSO stage 2 high clearance wings • Weekend warrior recovery kit by treaty oak • RCI – skid plates – entire vehicle + catalytic converter protection wings Interior: • Nano Ceramic IR – Avery Dennison Window tint – all windows • Several phone mounts • Upgraded Rear Hatch lift gate struts (ladder is heavy) • Boom blaster horn switch (featuring La cucaracha)
I know this added cost but I would invest in a scangauge tool so that you can run all the diagnostics and see what codes or errors you are getting. The dealer will do the same but might not tell you exactly what the issue is and send you home.

Do this. My friend's 2016 got eaten alive. New wiring harness fixed everything. Not free........
