I found a beautiful 2019 4Runner, but I'm concerned about the Carfax history. Curious if you would take a chance on this $50K vehicle with its history. I find it strange that a Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro, one of the most sought after vehicles, has already gone through 3 owners and an auto auction in less than 10,000 miles. Why would a dealership dump a TRD Pro with 8K in miles to an auction? No issues or accidents appear on the Carfax or Autocheck.

Does this raise alarm bells with any of you? My friend is of the mind "Its still under warranty, so who cares?" But it seems ...odd... to me.

    The bullet Points:

    Owner 1: Commercial Owner
9 Months - No accidents reported
Vehicle owned until 7578 miles, Ontario Canada
Sold to Walkerton Toyota , Canada

    Owner 2: Personal Owner
11 Days - No Accidents reported
Vehicle owned until 7995 miles (less than 500 miles)

    Owner 3: Personal Owner
Michigan Dept of Motor Vehicles- title Issued. No accidents reported
Dealer Inventory. Offered for sale on 10.12.20.
Dealer Inventory. Vehicle sold to Auto auction 3 days later, on 10.15.20. 8151 miles

Dealer Inventory. Vehicle for sale. 8151 miles.

Knowing the family that owns Walkerton Toyota (and Guelph Toyota) it could be that the Son drove it and moved onto something else. If you are really curious give John at Guelph Toyota (the Sales Manager) and ask him about it. He is a great guy and could maybe give you a little insight and then you can take it there to get serviced. It is a little odd that it went to auction though, again, maybe John can give you a little insight into this.

Interesting, it says it was owned in Michigan. Where are you buying this vehicle?

CARFAX has its quirks. A few years ago I ordered the new Honda Civic Sport, 3 years later I paid it off and got the lein removed from the title. Although I was still the original owner, CARFAX now showed 2 owners, even though it never once changed hands. That said, I had to explain that to the gentleman that bought it as on paper he was now going to be the 3rd owner, but in reality he was only the 2nd.

Thanks, I may do that. As you mentioned, I'm trying to wrap my head around why it would go to auction. In my area dealers are snapping them up. If that particular dealer didn't want it, you would think out would get sold to another dealership, and NOT go to an auction.

That is kind of weird that it would go to auction. Can you put the VIN into Toyotas owners website and see if it had any issues?

It could be because of the huge demand for trucks from Canada in the US because of the dollar. It is almost like someone bought it in Canada with the intention of selling it into the US.

For the right price I would buy it, I recently bought a 2019 - I was the 3rd owner, first owned 11 months, second less than 2 weeks - then me.
My guess, 2nd guy bought & then they found out they could not finance and the dealer took back or it was repoed
Its still under warranty - unless you see a flag, buy it for the right price

Well, the question is moot. They were selling that Voodoo Blue 4Runner for $54,988 with 8K in miles. I found one closer to home, Toyota certified, for $48,400 with 4K in miles.

The dealership at 55K refused to budge, even though the vehicle has been sitting for a month. The dealership I bought from didn't budge either, and they weaseled in a $299 fee (that bullsh!t theft protection service) that I didn't catch at first. The problem was, another buyer was in the store at the same time as me, waiting on my credit to go through. So I had to eat the "fee". That gentleman ended up taking a Barcelona Red TRD Off-Road when I balked. This was the only Voodoo Blue Toyota certified 4Runner with mileage that low within 1000 miles, and the dealership knew it.

As a side note, chasing a unique colored TRD Pro that has very low mileage and Toyota certified is stressful. I lost 2 within 24 hours of them being posted on Cars.com.

And finally, I traded in my 2015 Trail Premium edition to make the purchase. I bought it for $28K with 45,000 miles, and Carfax offered me $24,500 for it today. So she depreciated only $3,500 after being driven almost 50,000 additional miles. Not bad!

Army Green and Cement are about to get a whole lot less unique in 2021! That should make it a little easier to buy an Pro in one of those colors.

Congratulations on the purchase. So, do you have more than one 4R? Your profile says 2014 4R, but you stated you traded a 2015 Trail...

We have 2. I just sold the Barcelona Red Trail Premium for a Voodoo Blue TRD Pro with less than 5K in miles. I kept going back and forth between colors, but I already had red, and I really love voodoo blue. The Toyota certification with the 100K warranty on powertrain items pushed it over the edge.

Probably good that you passed on that one from Canada.

A few years ago I shopping for Jeep Wranglers, and noticed a lot of them had originally come from Canada. An issue with that is that they have to mess with the odometers to convert to miles, and I also learned that FCA USA would not honor the warranty of any vehicles originally purchased in Canada.

Don't know if Toyota has that same distinction, but you could have been S.O.L as far as warranty concerns if you had purchased it.
