Got a new 2019 TRD OR Premium and absolutely love this thing. Coming from a 2016 TRD OR Tacoma. Was not a fan of the Navigation in the Tacoma but was hoping it had improved in last couple years...

Went on a Road trip from Springfield, Il to Hamburg, NY and the Navigation is terrible?? Gave me 3 routes, all 3 were closer to an hour longer than what my Maps app showed on iPhone. So I kept it on just to compare to to my phone. It would of taken me down closed roads into heavy construction zones... closed exits..

Am I missing something?? Does anyone else think it sucks?

Averaged 19.9 mpg running 75 to 80 mph was happy with that. And over all very happy with it. No complaints. And I love its not constantly hunting for gears like the underpowered 6sp on the Tacoma that was annoying AF Lol

I replaced mine with a Kenwood with Garmin navigation. Blows away the factory unit...

Do you have a model reference For the Kenwood. Im satisfied with just XM radio and the basic deal. But it would be nice to have reliable Nav?!
Sometimes I go on trips with no cell service?!
    Thanks

There is a way to link your phone to your nav system and use Android google maps or iphone map apps

I bought this model on my last one. I've had 3 different models over the years in different Toyotas (Tacomas, Camry).

2018 on board nav does have a lot to be desired. However that being said and to be fair not sure most dealer installed units would alert you to road closures for construction. None of them are real time are they? It also doesn't alert you when you make a wrong turn by maybe saying "recalculating" or something like that. Still better than totally not having a clue where you are but could be better.

I believe with the Entune w/Nav, Scout GPS is not available.

With HD radio which I had around Indianapolis it’s supposed to alert you to traffic jams etc. and it didn’t even do that. It is better than having nothing but my biggest problem was it was going to make me drive an hour further on all three routes than was necessary from my Maps app on my iPhone

It won't work. Scout GPS only works with the Entune Plus (no integrated navigation) systems, not with Entune Premium.

On my trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles, it was pretty accurate most of the time. The traffic alert was pretty accurate too.

However it failed me once. It said a freeway interchange I needed to go was on the farthest left lane but it was really on the right in LA.

Blacked out badges, window deflectors, smoked 3rd brake light. I have a Borla muffler on order as well as some color matched engine cover stickers. I'll be painting the stock wheels soon as well. Falken tires in the fall as well.
It's the best system I've ever had in any car I've ever owned. Of course it's the ONLY one I've ever had! I've only used it a few times and so far it's OK. I'll see how it is when I go down to NC in Dec.

Google maps on iPhone lets you download maps to your phone for offline use.

This is one of the big reasons I waited for a 2020. Apple car play = I just run the map from my phone directly to the head unit. Works like a charm!

Good point but then we are back to the problem of if there is no cell service?! I do some canoe trips in SW Missouri and Arkansas. So I don’t want to rely on my phone? Its all good, I may upgrade the head unit. But between my Iphone and the Toyota Nav I’ll get there ...

from my experience, if you start a navigation course with google/Apple and don’t turn it off, it will continue working through any no service areas.

I’ve only had to use the car nav once - no service and wasn’t sure how to get back home from a ranch in the middle of nowhere.

I can't compare directly to the old gen nav, and I've never pressure tested it against my phone, but the few times I've used the 4Runner nav has been pretty good?!

I use apple car play with my 19 Z06 corvette works awesome. As long as you have cell signal before you start your destination it will get you there. I had no issues recently in NC for a week trip.

Why would you expect a databased map without any sort of connectivity to magically know there’s construction or closed ramps? The nav works fine when you have reasonable expectations.

With HD Radio its supposed to give traffic updates and has in the past.... The biggest gripe was it was going to take me an hour longer on all 3 routes than what my iPhone was going to?? plus toll roads and all that bullshit on the preferred route it picked?? It will get you there but there is definitely for room for improvement.

    Hello Jon,

The Nav is my only disappointment with my 2016 4R. It is really pathetic and outdated in most cases. When on a trip I always end up using my android and google maps. Not sure why Toyota Corp. doesn't address this especially with their emphasis on quality.
