I have a 2019 TRD Pro and was offroading on a small hill. I didn't quite make it up in 4 High so I backed down the hill to put it in 4low and try again. While reversing down the hill (I was in reverse) I hit a bumpy patch and the 4runner stalled. I dont think the bumps were anything the 4runner couldnt handle so I was quite shocked that it had stalled. When I threw it in park and tried starting it it did start fine, but I was still suprised backing down a bumpy hill would do that. I have done similar in the past and offroaded penty of bumpy areas in the past with no such issues.

    Any ideas why this happened?

There are some 2019’s that we’re affected by a faulty fuel pump, id check your VIN to see if you fall under the fuel pump recall.

Maybe just steep enough coupled with the right jarring to trigger the tipover sensor / fuel pump shut off?

Once I was in 2WD on a steep incline (it was a paved road but it was really steep). There was cross traffic at the top, so I had to come to a stop. When I let off the brake it rolled backwards and stalled.

Cranked right up, no lights or warnings, acted like nothing happened.

Drove 4Runner for 4 more years and friend now owns it and it's never happened again (2016 Trail Premium). Went on many offroad trips before and after that and climbed some stuff WAYYY steeper and harder, never hiccuped again, ever.

I think it had something to do will rolling back quickly.

I havent checked my VIN, but I did an inspection at the dealership about a month ago (standard free toyota car inspsection for 20k miles) and I asked if mine was part of the recall. They said no, but it might not be a bad idea to check the VIN anyways. Do you have a link for where I can do that?

Perhaps. I think at this point this explanation makes the most sense.

I beleive the one difference here is it sounds like you were in drive and the vehicle went backwards causing a stall. In my case I was in reverse so the vehicle was moving in the same direction as the gearing. I have heard of cases of the drive rollback stall, but since I was in reverse this was not the case. I am happy to hear you never had an issue again!
