Hi, I purchased a 4Runner about 1year ago new off the lot and after 4000 miles a noticed this whining sound coming from the drive train, I didn’t even know there was a trend out there on it. Now I’m also noticing vibration at16,000. I have taken the car in atleast 3 times for the same issue. The dealer says there is nothing wrong, pretty much acting like it’s all in my head, that’s what I feel.I’m going to take it to another dealer and see what they say. The last time it was in they rebalance 4 wheels took the car home and the following they I took it out again and there was a vibration along with the howling sound in the drivetrain.

Try this: driving along in a straight line, put the vehicle in 4wd, and see if it goes away. If so, could be the driver side needle bearing. The long term fix for which is to do the ecgs bushing swap.

If that’s not it, it’s hard to say; a lot of things could cause a whine. The next thing I’d probably do is check and make sure there is adequate gear oil in the diffs and top off if needed, and also grease the driveshafts.

Some tires can also hum, that could be potentially mistaken for driveline whine; but usually that’s only applicable for aggressive all terrain or mud terrain tires. What tires are you running?

The passenger side tire is also feathering so they gave it an alignment and rotation.I don’t think this should be happening to a new truck ether. Tire feather.

He has a limited, so it’s an AWD system which as far as I know can’t be disengaged.

OP, you can try test driving a new limited and see what differences you feel.

I did try a new truck and didn’t hear the whine, Tech claims it’s there just a different pitch. I know something is going on with mine.Driving back home, switched to H4l didn’t notice any difference in sound.

    I really think it’s a defective differential.

Are you hearing a whine from the engine or front diff? The 4runners have a unique whine that I notice in mine above 3500k. I had a 2011 which made a more noticeable whine than my current one but the whine is normal. If your diff is shifting into different modes smoothly and you’re not hearing any grinding or humming I wouldn’t worry about it. Looks like your runner is completely stock, and you’re under warranty so just drive it!

It’s sounds like the rear diff but not sure. When I play with the fuel pedal like feathering I can hear different pitch. Dealer says I have a drive train warranty up to 65000 so I guess I will have to deal with it. Will also have to check and make sure what he is saying is so. Thank you.

Standard power train warranty is until 60k or 5 years since it rolled of the lot new. And you have a 3 year or 36k mile warranty from the date it rolls of the lot that covers “bumper to bumper”. Just FYI.

I've never had a full time 4 wheel drive system. ( I know they are harder on tires and use more gas), but I would bet that the drivetrain is making that noise.
The only other thing I can figure is wheelbearings ? They will whine & howl
