Hello, I am new to this forum and vehicle maintenance in general.
My 2018 4runner SR5 premium threw code p0012 (bank 1 intake over retarded) about a week after the oil change that I serviced. No oil dripping to the ground but the plate covering the oil plug had some in it, i tightened the plug and topped off my oil. Reset the code and it stayed off for 2 days. Today it threw p0024 (bank 2 exhaust over advanced).

Car is driving fine, oil level is fine. I don’t think it’s the camshaft position sensors because that would mean 2 sensors on opposite banks went bad at the exact same time - unlikely. Same with VVTs i think??

Logically and keeping in mind cost and time to repair:
    1 - bad oil filter - I used OEM
2 - contaminated oil (I changed according to viscosity spec and volume)
    3 - combo of 1 and 2
    4 - timing chain stretch :/

I can’t settle on the CPS or VVTs only because it was running perfect and all of a sudden 2 errors on separate banks….

I’m thinking about starting fresh with another oil change, and run it for a few days. If the code comes back, trying to pull all the VVTS to check for sticking or gunk. Lastly sending it to the dealership which I want to avoid for cost but also I want to learn how to fix it myself!

    Any help is appreciated upfront!

Timing chain stretch on a 18’, doubtful. If I had to guess, I’d say an oil delivery problem with the VVT.

If it were the VVT, since I got a code for bank 1 and for bank 2 wouldn’t that mean the LH/RH VVTs were failing simultaneously? I feel like that’s unlikely too.

Or are you getting at the oil itself has something wrong with it and the VVTs aren’t faulty, just can’t perform at what they should be?

Did you ever figure out what was wrong and the fix? I am having the same issue and the dealership can't figure it out.
