2014 4runner barely out of warranty transfer case leaking!

Hey everyone I have a 2014 limited 4runner with 53k miles and I crawled under tonight to change the differential fluid and noticed the transfer case is all covered in sticky gear oil. My question is has anyone had any luck with Toyota covering a warranty issue as a courtesy that is only out by a few weeks. Mine ran out 4 weeks ago. I will see what the dealer says tomorrow. I called Toyota customer care and they said they can't say anything until it's looked at by the dealer which is fair but if it's close on the warranty sometimes they extend a courtesy and sometimes they don't. It worth a shot, your chances are significantly higher if you do all your services there. If you bought it new and never came back it’s unlikely they goodwill the repair.

 

Yea.....bought it new at a different dealership because they didn't have a red limited on their lot. I did the oil changes myself but now I'm thinking I should have had them do the oil changes as they would have spotted this most likely while it was still under warranty. Let's assume they deny the warranty repair has anyone had luck with getting corporate involved and getting a goodwill repair taken care of? Worst case I think I will just take it to my local transmission shop. I'm just curious as to what the actual failure is I see now that there are tons of issues out there with these had I know that sooner I would have been checking it. I was always a Toyota guy for reliability but I'm not impressed so far....

 

Toyota are sticklers so i doubt it.

When my Mustang blew up the rear diff and was 2 months out of warranty, Ford still covered. Toyota would have told me to get lost or make me pay if the same situation happened.

Offroading can ruin any 4runner until they fall apart IMO.

2005 4runner SR5 150,000 V6. Never a check engine oil light or problem in 15 years.

Trade in for an M1.

No offroading on mine ever.

 

Yes it has been at the dealer while I was on vacation this week. After several days of back and forth with corporate Toyota the customer service representative got back to me today and said my local dealer would offer a discount on the work as well as Toyota corporate will eat some of it. The original quote was $900 before taxes and Toyota came back at $380.77 after taxes on the work so no it's not 100% the way I would like it but much better than I expected so I'm ok with that.

 

And no I have never taken this off road it's my wife's grocery getter

 

4runners are meant to to offroad. Sounds like you should've gotten a highlander or something

 

As if Using the transfer case would nullify its warranty in anyway. Only with toyota do we have to worry about them saying "you offroaded your offroader so warranty doesn't apply"

You haven't said what the problem was? Front differential / transfer case leaking?
Sounds like someone left the fill plug out.

Front transfer case takes just 1 quart of gear oil.
rear takes three.
I did my RD at 145,000 miles.
Planning on changing every 5 years.
No front differential on 2 wheel drives.
2005 SR5 V6
Dealer did RD at 100,000 miles. Cost was over $350.
Takes three quarts - so I'll do this myself from now on!

 

Offroading can ruin any 4runner till they fall apart? So don't off-road? Then when I say I don't off-road you say then why have a 4runner? What are you getting at! Define offroading? I live in the Northeast not southern California if you don't have 4wd and decent clearance good luck getting through many of these back roads that aren't maintained well in the winter. You have seen a limited 4runner right? Are you sure you have? Let that sink in a little....if you still don't get it think about it some more. Besides my wife gets what she wants if she wants a Jeep Rubicon to never take off road she can get it I don't tell her what car she can or cannot buy

 

It's the seal between the front of the transfer case and transmission. No I didn't leave the fill plug out if that were the case I would have just added more oil and put the plug in and I don't think Toyota would quote $900 for that

 

You're arguing with two different people friend. I said why have a 4runner to the other guy who said you shouldn't offroad a 4runner, not to you.
Also since you brought it up the limited trim is the only one with full time 4WD. I know some who might say Limited is a better offroader once you take the side skirts off.
