Hey all, I am in the market for a 4runner - Ive been searching high and low.

I finally found one that had some undercoating done at some point.
At 123K it is not nearly as rusty looking as most I've seen.
I am from the rust belt...so it's important to me to get something that has very little, clean what parts do have rust with a wire wheel and do undercoatings each year.

I live at a distance from this one so I am relying on the photos taken by the person selling and also from a distance PPI. If that checks out I will go there to see it in person. From the photos. I can tell there was an undercoating and maybe it was done only once in its lifetime...I do see rust - mainly on the fuel tank shield (that I can sandblast /replace and paint but I'm not sure what rust would be like underneath) and also on the control arms on the front wheels and above those....I also notice there is a bit rusting on the spare tire

But what do you guys think from these photos? Is this 4runner too rust in some areas? Or would these be a good candidate and look pretty solid? I'm curious to hear from those who have a lot of experience with these frames! Any and all help appreciated.

    its a 2012 4runner SR5 - stock height and suspension
Added photos of front, rear, drivers side and passenger side below

It almost looks like a rubberized coating but hard to tell since pics are dark. If indeed it is the coating and they didn’t do it since brand new I would be weary (I would be weary no matter what for rubber coating) a rock or road debris will kick up and crack the coating and trap moisture making the the perfect rust environment

It doesn't look bad to me. The spare tire has a good bit of rust, but the front struts from the photos look original and not all rusty. Those skid plates would have caught a bunch of junk and rusted pretty bad in 12 years if they were from a bad spot. Considering they're OE, and the front has to come off for oil changes, I'd say that it's probably fine.

Look at the shock and strut mounting bolts. Things that you will probably take off when you get it. Photos of the front upper strut mount will show pretty quickly if it's fine or bad.

yea..unfortunately it is a serious question. Before looking toyota I had old subarus that had a manufacture coating and I never had to think about rust until they were old, old. Even up in michigan they rarely rusted bad underneath for me. However I cannot handle the repair bills and constant maintenance for subarus anymore. I know toyota is prone to rust but I am willing to put in the effort for something more long lasting mechanically.

here is a picture of the control arms and above that I forgot to add

This was where I wondered concern

Frame looks like it has alot of life left on it. What’s compelling you to select this truck when it’s far away? Miles are not super low. Is it priced aggressively? Does it have a hard to find feature that you want?

good question. Honestly, I need a utility type vehicle for some light carpentry that I can also commute in. Most utility vehicles in michigan are very rusty. I am unwilling to get other brands due to having them in the past and not wanting to get back into the issues. I have had some friends who had toyota and took care of them and seemed like a nice fit for longevity.

This may be ridiculous but I really enjoy the simplicity of the aux and having just a radio /CD player in the older 4runners. I am not a huge fan of the computer screen at all. I also live in the city of detroit so I am avoiding push start like the plague for theft reasons. Never had any issues with my key starts etc....Like to keep it simple.

Really can't afford a newer 4runner and not a big fan of gambling with the gaskets of the 4th gen.

Unfortunately when you want something in michigan you have to go a ways to get it... and if youre gonna get something rust free it better be pretty close to not being too too rusty on your bill
