I am looking at buying a 2011 Limited 4wd in Socal. It's got great service records and looks very clean. Is there anything in particular to look out for with this year/trim? I have heard the XREAS system can leak and need total replacement. Anything else?

Frame and suspension component rust. Get under that thing for a thorough inspection.

Thanks. Forget to post it's a California vehicle. But I will still be crawling underneath.

Will the seller let you take the vehicle to a mechanic and put it up on a lift to go over it? A neighbor was interested in the 2011 Lexus RX 350 I had for sale and I encouraged him to test drive it and take it to a mechanic to have it checked out. I was confident it was in good shape and didn't want a neighbor pissed at me if it had a problem in a month. He took it to a AAA facility 25 miles or so away and they said the rear brakes would need to be serviced in the next 5000 miles or so but everything else looked good. AAA does that service for free for members, at least in that facility. My neighbor bought the car. I'm not sure what all the mechanic did as part of the inspection, but he obviously removed the tires to check the brakes. I would guess he went over the underside of the vehicle to look for rust and and check the suspension and perhaps hooked the vehicle up to computer to make sure it ran properly and didn't throw any codes.

I will be bringing a mechanic friend. He doesn't have specific experience with the 4Runner.

That's great. I wouldn't think a mechanic would need 4Runner specific experience to know what to look for in a used vehicle.
