Looked at a well running 3rd Gen 4Runner this evening -220k miles on the clock-super clean interior -test drove it for 35 minutes with owner -drove great . Checking underneath the frame I noticed on the right side basically from the passenger door in the back to the passenger door in the front there were several frame plates on the frame that were welded. There was also one spot on the side of the frame where I saw a hole which that was about the size of a quarter underneath the passenger door ---there was no plate on that........ I'm guessing while this section has frame plates on it, it may indicate that other parts of the frame on that side could be going soon as well? On the other side of the vehicle, there were no plates and appeared to be surface rust consistently underneath that someone painted with an anti-corrosive paint...... Vehicle drove great but at what point do you decide as a future buyer to pull the plug And become concerned with frame rot and frame plates? Is what I am describing here basically a steer clear kind of deal ---Rest of the frame seemed fine...... Help me make an educated decision here-Thanks!

Steer clear. I bought an '87 Marty Mcfly xtracab once that had been repaired. I had to redo it and have it straightened. One they have cancer it continues to spread. Especially because nice 4runners can be found. The xtracab was a rare bird by the time I got it.
