2000 SR5 - 4wd without CDL button

    Sorry for the redundant question, but this is still confusing to me as I look at different models.

    I'm looking at 2000 SR5 4WD.

    Attached are 2 pictures of the shifters. It does not have the "4WD" button on the shifter, which means no AWD correct? So this rig is either H2 or RWD, or 4WD H4 or L4.

    There is no RR diff lock button and there is also no CDL button on the dash, which is confusing because I see that alot when looking at 2003-2009 models.

    If I've read the posts correctly, the 2000 SR5 does not have a CDL button because it "assumes" a center diff lock the moment you engage H4 or L4 correct? The 4wd in this rig is locked, and only for offroad or low traction surfaces. With L4 just being higher torque?

    Last question. Assumng the above is true, can a factory e-locker from say a 2000 Limited be easily added?

    Hi John,

    hopefully this will satisfy any questions you may have... The 2003-2009 you mention are a completely different 4wd syste with lockers available only on 08-09? I believe.

    I have seen people question adding a factory locker as well but most point to after market for ease of install.

    This is the 4wd shift lever from a manual transmission, if your vehicle was a 2wd it wouldn't have any shift lever. If your unsure look under the car for a front drive shaft going up the the front diff. 4runners of this time came in 2 versions, 2wd and part time 4wd. Now the 4wd versions had a different 4wd shifter between manual transmission and automatic transmission. Yours has the shifter out of a manual transmission which is odd, it would normally have a button on the side.

    Both these shifters accomplish the same thing, whether it be a lever pull or a button on the side of the sifter, it splits power going to front and back 50/50. AWD and 4wd is a very confusing topic, but its easiest to think of 4wd being a more robust system for off roading, while AWD is usually added for better on road performance and snow. 4runners have a 4wd system. H4 is for driving in poor conditions an higher speed like a snowy road, or a gravel road. L4 or low 4 is purely meant for extreme situations, its geared to give you lots of power at low gear.

    The e locker is like the central locker that you used to get into 4wd, but instead of splinting power between your front and rear wheels, it splits it evenly between your rear wheels. In a case that one of your rear wheels is in the air and the other is on solid ground, with a an open differential 100% of the power would go through the lifted tire because it is the path of least resistance, this means that you would go nowhere even though one tire is on the ground. With the locker engaged it forces the power to be split equally between the two rear wheels. So once you engaged that, 50% of the power would spin the lifted wheel while the other 50% would go to the wheel with traction and your vehicle would move. This isn't necessary unless your doing crazy stuff. You can fit them after the fact if you want.
