I just bought a 1994 Toyota 4Runner 3.0 4x4 - wondering if that engine/transmission just revs a little higher than new models before shifting. AUTO - usually hits 3,000 rpm before shifting 1-2 gear. it feels fine when it does shift, from what I can gather those older models just rev higher before shifting but not sure. Can't do much about it right now but ask.

It does make sense to have the shift points a little higher on a smaller displacement engine in order for it to build torque. You might look up the specs on that model year to see what rpm peak torque numbers occur. These newer 4.0L motors, if I remember right, have a torque rating that exceeds its horsepower rating. They are torquey little beasts. Welcome to the forum!
