I have had a 1987 4runner for 15 yrs of trail riding fun.
unfortunately my a340e auto transmission is shot. My 22re runs like a dream so i would like to fix the transmission. My question is do i have the transmission rebuilt or do i get a new a340e transmission.

    Any advice is appreciated

Welcome from Wisconsin! A new trans. will probably have warranty, it also depends who rebuilds your trans., it may also have warranty. Either way could be OK as long as your rebuild is by a reputable person/company.

A good shop and a warranty should work out.

You might have to get it rebuilt, I’m not sure if you’ll be able to find a brand new transmission for a 37 year old model

    Btw, welcome to the forum

I did a quick search and found used transmissions between 700-1000 and new refurbished for around $2300. If you had a shop you trusted nearby I would probably have your original rebuilt but that would depend on cost. It’s probably going to be close in price between refurbished and rebuilding yours. Until you get a price to rebuild yours it’s tough to say which way to go.
