Temperature under 25 degrees Fahrenheit engine will kick 1-2 times in low gears in between shifts. Is this normal? Transfer case? Transmission?

after a few minutes of driving doesn’t do it again.

Like a hard shift for the first couple times on a cold morning?

Yes as if it is kicking into gear. I hear a thump.

Never experienced that but in fairness the 4R is also garaged so on a freezing cold night in the northeast the garage may only get to mid-thirties inside.

I think it's common enough for an auto trans to hard shift a bit when it's cold. Go easy on it those first few miles . Anticipate the shifts to minimize the clunk .
