I have researched replacing shift solenoids, however I'm unclear which solenoid is"E", which the error code describes. Is there also an external solenoid located near the neutral safety switch? Thanks in advance

Did you do the FSM diagnosis? It may or may not be the solenoid. After a bit of research, the issue can be anything from fixing the input sensors to new solenoid to replacing the Torque Converter.

What is FSM? I would assume if the scan result says 0770 confirmed, that it would have something to do with one of the 3 solenoids attached to the valve body. I'm just trying to determine if it could be something external, such as wiring to the solenoids.

FSM is the factory service manual. Did you read the link? The troubleshooting section from the FSM for this code is posted there.

That code does not necessarily mean it's the solenoid.

There are are a variety of inputs the computer compares and if they don't align, the ecu assumes a failed solenoid.

Inputs could be wrong. Solenoid could indeed be bad. Torque converter could be bad because it participates in the activity that the ECU is trying to perform with the solenoid.

You may want to take it to a pro for a diagnosis.

Mine has the same problem. This is what I have learned:
When I bought my SR5 Sport in September, the guy that sold it to me had the same problem. He put in a new solenoid and after 250 miles the lights (CEL,VSC Trac and VSC OFF) came back on. His transmission guy took it apart again and replaced the O rings with a kit. After he did that the lights came on AGAIN.
At this point it must be said that there are 2 types of solenoids - one made in Japan and the other is not. The ECM cannot "see" the non-Japanese solenoid. Also bad O rings will also throw the code.
So replace the O rings and replace the solenoid with one made in Japan and the code should not come up.
    Update: 01/05/22
I replaced the original solenoid (It says "TOYOTA" on it), but found an exhaust leak at the joint of two pipes not 3 inches from the downstream O2 sensor. John told me that the backpressure was probably throwing the CEL. I was ready to buy a smoke check system before he told me that. John told me about exhaust repair putty and I went to the parts store for some. I prepped the surface with a wire brush and smeared the goop on. Then I disconnected the battery to reset the codes. After a 59 mile drive up and down hills, and even passing, I am very happy to say that NO dashboard lights came on. Oh what a relief it is!
    Update 01/10/11
Yeah, the damn lights came on:mad: but this will be my final post because it is
    SOLVED
Up above I mentioned that John pointed out the leak between the two flanges and
I used the exhaust putty, but I missed one little spot on the top of the flanges (see
photo) That's why the lights came on. Today I went to a friend's muffler shop and
BAM there's no more joint to leak at!! When I was returning home I was driving on
the interstate TRYING to make the lights go on, especially making the trans downshift in passing gear two times. No lights.
I'm positive that is the solution to the CEL flipping on.

I used to get this code after climbing a steep hill. Put a transmission cooler on & rarely get the code anymore. Go figure! My cup holders don’t get warm anymore either.
Transmission has always shifted fine & displayed no symptoms nor has the torque converter.
