02 SR5 - 99 tall - What shocks?

New member who is trying to get informed. Swapping rusted out frame and replacing suspension. Decided to go with 99 tall because only want minimal lift and like OEM ride (90% DD will use my 2500 to tow). I tried searching OEM shocks with no luck. I already have part #'s for the 99's. My question is do I go with 99 OEM shocks to match springs or with 02 which match the vehicle? Most searches say they are the same shock but part #'s are different. My thought is 99 spring would over extend 02 shock. Also open to the 5100's but heard the ride is a little stiff for DD.

 

What's 99 Tall?

OEM shocks can be purchased from Toyota. Use an online dealer. But they will be expensive. They are Tokico shocks I believe.

 

99 Tall are Toyota OEM springs from the 99 4runner SR5 Highlander Edition. 99 tall springs are supposedly 1" taller than my OEM 02 SR5 springs. No problem finding them online just want to make sure I am getting the correct shocks to match 99 springs.

 

You'll simply lose a tad bit of down travel.

The slightly taller coil isn't going to be an issue especially since it's just a daily driver. Even then, if you took it off road, you'll see that the Highlander edition uses the same bumpstop setup as a non-Highlander.

So in short, just use your current shocks if they've got life left in them.

 

I see. You'd need to find out from a dealer what shocks were used for that model...and you may have to get lucky and get a parts guy that knows his stuff.

If it were me, I'd try and find a VIN for that specialty model. That will pull up the body style and the correct parts for it.

In the end, I don't think 1 inch of spring change is enough change to where TOYOTA would even bother having different shocks.

 

Why not just get a good set of after market shocks. Would be better than stock shocks for probably the same price.

 

How would they be better?

Aftermarkets don't last nearly as long and would be stiffer. He says he wants a stock ride.
