Hi all, first post here. I recently came into possession of an '01 Limited with 260k on the clock. I'm new to 4Runners but not to wrenching, electrical work, etc. Today I was driving down the road ruminating on how interesting the discrepancy of luxury features in this truck is. For example, it has auto climate control, but doesn't unlock the doors when you put the transmission in park or withdraw the key from the ignition, nor does it automatically lock them when put in drive, an annoyance to my arm which is usually propped through the open window, and to all occupants upon parking when trying to exit.

To my surprise, upon googling a bit, there IS an auto lock/unlock feature on these vehicles, but that's where the concrete information starts to diverge a bit. There's the factory-equipped keyless entry system, then there's the actual "security" systems Toyota offered, which, as I gather, are some variation between RS3000, RS3200, and RS3200 plus. All I know for certain about the truck's security system is that it has a red blinking light next to the rear window button on the console that says "SECURITY", and window stickers that say "This Vehicle Equipped With Toyota Theft Deterrent System." Looking into the different systems a bit, there's some discourse about the FOB you have indicating which system. The FOBs I have have three buttons on the front and a red panic button on the back, but are I believe not the original FOBs because the rear window button is actually the image of a car trunk, and they do not have a Toyota logo on them anywhere. That being said, the FOB most closely resembles the RS3200 FOB.

Looking at the RS3200 manual, it indicated some order of steps to put the car into programming mode, which would allow me to activate the auto lock/unlock feature, but I cannot for the life of me get that to work - it never seems to enter programming mode. Furthermore, some folks say if you don't have a black box under the driver's seat, then you don't have the security system, just the remote keyless entry system. This is where the trail of information goes completely cold. I'm almost at the point where I'll take it to the dealer to have them look at it and tell me what's up, but I'm absolutely loathe to give those people any of my money, and I very much like to do my own work and not have anybody else touch my cars.

Here's what I'm after - concrete info on which alarm system I have, if I have one at all, and why it won't enter programming mode. Blown fuse? Where is the black box, if there is one?

    TIA!
