At what duration could I safely use this system while engine is off? I wouldn’t be running anything more than a fan in the tent to keep the younglings cool. That and maybe charge a phone. I want them to be comfortable but I also want to be able to drive home.

You would be better off using a fan with rechargeable batteries. To charge your phone I would use a small powerbank with a solar panel. The powerbank can recharge your phone a few times and can be charged back up in the sun.

On Amazon there is a Wallet type AA battery charger that can charge 2-4 batteries and has its own solar panel.

I would think this would be the best 40-60 bucks you could spend rather than risk a dead battery. the batteries that come in our vehicles are not designed for this....unless you want to spend about 400+ for an AMG battery.

You're asking about leaving the engine off but the ignition on with the inverter powered? I wouldn't do that more than a few minutes. There'll be more draw on the battery than just the inverter, for sure, and depending on the state of health of your battery you could find it below safe starting amps pretty fast.

Not sure of your threshold for pain financially but have you looked at the little "red" Honda generators? The small ones maybe around 1000 watts should power what you want and their damn near silent. Yeah they need gas to operate but all things considered they pretty much sip that also.

This is what I use as an alternate power source. Lasts for a few days. And can jump a vehicle/boat in an emergency...29A3BF98-027F-4CEE-8A98-DA1776B549F7.jpg

If that is the one with the compressor, I'd get a different model/brand. The air compressor on mine died just outside of the STANLEY's warranty.

No, it’s a Christmas present from the Major General. It’s alot more compact. It’s nice to run the spotlight in the boat without using main battery power...

Even though I had two batteries in my center console. I removed one. Then the single one just blew up on me. Never had that happen before. Makes me think twice about battery technology....

Just returned from the trip and all seems well. We used the fan intermittently through the night with no hiccups. I’ve had my eye on a Honda genny for awhile but they’re a little steep. I’ll probably have my battery tested a little later today to assess the damage. I’ll post my findings.

Agree about the Honda's but when you need it well you just need it to work. Some thing's are just worth going all the way. Throw the hints around at Christmas time. :D

Off topic but I don’t want to start another thread. What kind of gas mileage do you get? I averaged 23 miles per gallon on my way to and from the camp site. One of the first things I did was swap the air filter for a K&N. Seems like a good choice.

Yes plenty of decent models out there and agree that Honda gets premium dollars. Just make sure it's a "super quiet" (inverter) model. Walked up to someone running a small Honda maybe a month ago and I literally didn't even know it was running till I was maybe five feet away they run that quiet now-a-days.
